What size boards are people foiling in the surf?
« on: April 06, 2017, 12:13:23 PM »
Wondering what size boards the pros and the rest of us are riding currently and recently?

My interest is in having a second board to learn how to fly the foil and to foil surf in really clean glassy soft waves.  Seems like opinions are all over the place, and it's hard to know how much the foil will ad to stability of a really small board.

I listened to this podcast and Zane says he is(was?) on a hypernut 6'9"x23"?
http://podcast.wndnwvs.com/e/zane-keko-schweitzer-ultimate-waterman/

Curios what bigger guys like Chuck, Laird, and Dave Kalama have been riding?

Here are some videos and I want to know what size board is being ridden in each one?

Chuck Patterson:

Laird Hamilton:

Laird on a different board:

Dave Kalama:

Thanks!
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

I think the laird hanalei vid is mid 7'. Kalama I'd say is right at 8'

But the Maui guys will know.

Not really sure what they're riding, but from what I've read it seems like the foil doesn't add a whole lot of stability. In the kiting world guys are going as light, short, and thin as possible once they get the hang of flying the foil to reduce swing weight and windage.

For SUP I think the best option is going to be something in the 7.0 to 7.6 range, chopped nose, and the smallest width and volume you can reasonably paddle on a calm day. A wide tail will help you get going earlier without sacrificing anything on the wave.

For me, at 85kg with marginal skills, I'm looking for a 7.2 or 7.4 Hyper Nut or SimSUP 100-110l. I can paddle them, barely, without the foil, but they should be small enough not to be a hindrance once I get flying.

Pretty much this ^^^^

Me and friends converted Naish Raptors  -  They're all 7' long w/ three widths available 28'' ( what I ride @ 155 lbs. )  31'' & 33''.  The 28'' is 95L but is pretty stable due to chopped nose / wide bat tail.

Excuse me if it's been covered elsewhere but..... once ya have a board- how do you determine box/mast placement?

I've just ordered a blank at 7'8" 130l , its my first foil Sup and I hope it's not too small :-/ I'm 97 pies

Foil position is hugely dependant on foil and board shape
Generally your back foot tends to sit on top of the mast on most foils
So where you stand on the board in surf position , move the box 50mm forwards IMO

Sweet, I appreciate the feedback.

Here is the gofoil tuttle placement recommendation (pretty sure this applies to SUP):

Call me a heretic but I've seen guys out at San O, and I've seen these vids, and ... I just don't see this as being all that fun.
Guess I need more convincing or a someone that's tried it and agrees with me to voice an opinion.

Why wouldn't they just give mid point of board to mid point of mast dimension. That, should be way more accurate and almost the same for everyone and every board.

That chart they did provide seems like a mess, prime for wild errors with a mounting box that has no adjustment. Just seems so sloppy.

Foiling isn't for everyone , but it seems like the guys who get into it absolutely love it. I come from a kite foiling background and to me surfing is a bit too slow ... Sitting waiting for a set and then missing the wave , baa

Here in Jeffrey's bay surfing is huge ! They hold the billabong surf competition here ... The only reason I'm getting into sup/surf foiling is for when the wind is poor :-)
My surf foil moulds arrive this week !

Call Dave Daum at Kings Paddle Sports, he is making foils for boards and told me he can make a sup foil set up custom based on your skill, weight, height, etc, also based on the of board you prefer.
