Wedding Rings and Broken Paddles???
« on: April 02, 2017, 11:38:01 PM »
O.K. Guys, here’s one for you.

I was on Seabreeze and came across a couple of posts where individuals claim that wearing  a wedding ring can cause enough wear on the paddle shaft to actually cause the shaft to break. You can see the thread here:
https://www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Stand-Up-Paddle/Review/Paddle-now-up-sh1t-creek

So, what do you think? Does this have any merit? Are there any in depth studies showing that single men get longer life out of their paddles?  ;)

Or do single men just have stronger shafts (sorry, couldn’t resist).   ;D

Seriously though, do you think there is anything to this? Should we be taking our rings off before we paddle?

I can see evidence of damage from my wedding ring on my old quikblade. So depending on how good your paddle stroke is or isn't I could see it happening. I break a paddle every year or two. Best solution I have come up with is buying a paddle with a lifetime warranty and just sending it in if it breaks.

I have a couple of 2012 Kialoa paddles that show no physical evidence of contact with my (plain-band) wedding ring.  And, for the few shafts that I've snapped, the breaks occurred below the bottom grip.

On the other hand, a ring with a gem stone can definitely score/nick a shaft leading to a break.  For that matter, anything harder than the carbon fiber shaft can nick it and set it up for failure.

Wedding rings are also hell on a rocks glass.  As a courtesy to the barkeep, take them off at the pub.

I have had the same concerns.  I don't get wear on the shaft so much as wear on the handle.  My handle is delamming a little.

I didn't even know this was a thing. I'll have to check out my KeNalu for damage.

I love wearing a ring (married well.) But I have a "sport" ring from a company that I have no affiliation with. (Did you get that? This is not an ad. lol)

Safe Ringz. You can google them. Silicone wedding bands for sports and work. Cheap (like $10) and I like the look of my black one. I lose one every couple of years but they can't hurt you or your gear.

Also good if you are an electrician.

Problem solved and you will finally score points with your wife for buying something paddle/surf related.  ;)

My father-in-law lost part of his finger when his wedding ring caught on some pipes. They can be hazardous!

Yes, in more ways than one!   ;D

Only kidding. I'm one of the lucky guys who found the right partner. Will be celebrating our 25th anniversary in September this year.

Wedding rings are also hell on a rocks glass.  As a courtesy to the barkeep, take them off at the pub.

That's a slippery slope right there  ;D I usually take the ring off when I go to paddle or surf. I noticed that ring is getting loose in cold water and don't wanna risk losing it.

Sadly, I found that my ring was cutting into the mats at yoga class as well.

A lot more guys would do yoga if they knew what a great spectator sport it is.

My wife really wants me to wear my wedding ring - I have lost 3 now. One was paddlesurfing at L'poko in Maui. The other 2 were fishing and clamming. So the Pacific O has 3 of my rings. I wore my current ring last week when we were in Texas. I told her that I haven't lost any rings in the Gulf of Mexico yet and wanted to try.

But it stayed on. Guess we will have to go back and give it another try.
Make paddleboarding great again!
