Advice for GoPro and mount
« on: January 03, 2017, 11:51:45 AM »
My son and I are set for our first surf trip out of the US as we are going to CR in March. Over Christmas break we were talking taking pictures. He has a GoPro mount on an old long board but not the one his is taking. Neither of us wants a permanent mount on the nose of our boards, so looking for advice about attaching the GoPro to my paddle. Also he has the first GoPro that came out, so thinking about upgrading for our trip, so looking for any feedback if the newer ones are better as I'm a non-tech guy. Thanks!

While doing a search, saw a really good thread on the Hero session, especially Blueplanets video with the paddle mount - I'm thinking the session with the paddle mount might be the way to go unless something new and better valued has come out in the past year.

I think this is the thread you are referring to for DIY paddle mount:
http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=28892.0

The video on this page shows some different mounting options:

I think the headmount angle is the most immersive, the paddle mount works best for getting a few stills but usually not great for video footage.

I second this. I use a paddle mount occasionally- but it only 'real' benefit is capturing frontside waves with the paddle behind you.

I use the session and a homemade mount- and its only on days where I can go left and its barreling for the elusive barrel still or bottom turn shot. (my profile pic is from this mount fyi)

Outside of down the line or bottom turns the paddle mount footage will make you sick :)
