I was getting ready to go out at Privates and putting on my helmet and a bunch of young men drove by in a station wagon flipping the bird and yelling "You look like a penis with a hat on!" 

I waved and nodded in agreement. I haven't been roundly mocked and catcalled since my inflatable, it was kind of refreshing.

There is a clarifying simplicity that comes when the opinions that matter to oneself narrow ... great relief/ freedom in getting to a point in life where you just don't give a &^%$ what most people think, much care about being "cool".

Embracing ones inner dork makes life way more enjoyable.

In the early 90s windsurfing in Aruba I wore a helmet and was made fun of.  When Dasher made a video, when it showed me it was captioned "no windsurfers were hurt during the filming of this video"

Now many windsurfers wear them, and starting to see them on fast multihull sailboats.

I had a nice session in La Jolla today by the pier. Paddling back into a bunch of set waves I got over the whitewater but fell in the turbulence and my board punched me in the face. I've got a red mark across my nose and a little puffiness under my eye. Might graduate to a shiner.  When I was loading up afterward a nice young lady said "Did someone punch you for being on a standup? Those assholes, this has to stop!"

It was kind of funny and sweet at the same time. I need a posse of outraged young chicks to protect me.

In the earlier days of snowboarding and 45 year old friend of mine fell and hit his head. He decided he'd wear his windsurfing Gath helmet snowboarding the next time he went. He took his teenage kids snowboarding and they wouldn't stand in the lift lines with him because he was a geek. All the cool snowboarders came up to him and told him the helmet was rad and they wanted to know where they could get one. His kid decided it really wasn't that uncool.

Driving back from the mountains and hearing that Michael Kennedy and Sonny Bono died - 1998. Bought a goofy helmet and stickered it all up.
