Have you ever known...
« on: September 22, 2007, 11:09:24 AM »
That you shouldn't'a done something as soon as you did it?

Well that was the case when I downloaded the free software for the APS 3000 shaping machine (just to see what it looked like....).  Two days later, I have done almost nothing else.  The problem is, the software is really intuitive.  If you have some existing image program skills, you have already used all of the tools.  Yet, that does not a shaper make.

Here is my crack (version 306 B) at a new 8'4 (shaped at 8'6 to allow for some shrinkage).  I wanted to keep the volume right around the 116 of my current board.  If you download the AKU software, email me, and I will send you the .brd file that this software kicks out. That way you can view all of the slices which show rails and bottom shape, etc.  Better yet, maybe you can fix 'er up for me.

Warning: have coffee ready and no plans for the weekend.

Really cool stuff.  Reminds me a bit of when online poker took off and the traditional poker players played down the skill ability of the online players.  Then it turned out that the online players were playing 10x the hands as the traditional players and improving faster than anyone imagined.  More games equals more experience faster and quicker than lifetimes of traditional poker.

THere has to be a part of you that wants to have this shaped out and test ride it?

By the time you got to 3 to 4 where would you be.  Beta to refined stage could be 4 to 6 weeks.

Oh, yeah.  This one, the 8'0 full railed swallow tail, the 8'10 pin tail-pulled nose mini gun.....and then there would be the ultra cool little rippers for Chan.

But that would not be any too fair to the environment.  The amount of foam that could be wasted....

Hey Rand if you have time draw up a 7'6 ripper model for my son. Would love to see some ideas.

His height is 5 feet and 90 lbs. He surfs Hookipa, sand piles, Kahului Harbor, south shore, etc.  Unfortunatley my house is in Kihei...lol... This will be his first year trying to SUP in the winter waves.

Aloha

I used the AKU software on that blue fish that we made. It's pretty easy to use and fun to mess around with. I like how you can move you mouse parallel along your shape and it will tell you the width of the board at any given length. I made my template by taking width measurements from the shape on the computer every 6 inches, then plotted them on a peice of wood, connected them and cut it out.

Hi Byron,

By my (brain damaged) calculations, this should work well for him up to about 120 lbs.  The bottom 3 slices are tail, mid and nose.  I left the base flat, but you could easily add vee or a double (or a ve with double) if you wanted.

That is cool.  In the slices view you can hold the shift key and mouse through a cross section of your entire board to see how it all blends.

Really fun to play with are the guide points.  In the bottom view, you can set a point that would be the center of your traction pad, and another at your front foot position (if you measure your stance range).  Then you could tune your rocker for front/back foot juicing.

Gets the brain goin' for sure.

Hey Rand you wouldn't happen to know how much nose rocker is on your PSH 9'2" would you?
Just wondering...
Thanks
