Custom Downwind Foil Board
« on: November 28, 2016, 10:36:48 AM »
Hellooooooooooooooo,

So I ordered a custom board for downwind foiling a while back and picked it up a couple weeks ago.  The DW (Gofoil Maliko) foil I want isn't available yet so I have taken the board out surfing a couple times to get the feel for it.  Dimensions?  I haven't measured, I told my shaper width 30" and that any other dimension would be a wild guess so I left it up to him.

Here's a vid from yesterday:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-sVc4tEHr4

I have another session with just the paddle cam view, I'll post when I get a chance.

The board feels like my other downwind boards except it surfs "better" in that it's more familiar and predictable.

Stoked to give foiling a go  ;D
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

@Clay

That was another fine video from you. Just watching you on your board just reminds me of the feeling of "contentment". Those waves just seemed right for you and your board.

As always, thanks for sharing your videos.

Cool the see the water coming through the tuttle box.  I have been discussing foil boards with my friend Jeff and we decided to just retrofit an old board and see what works before making a custom foil board.  I'm thinking the foil will add quite a bit of stability so you should be able to go more narrow than what you usually use.  Looking forward to hearing how your board works with the foil.

This looks like a good start for an all around foiler (is there such a thing?) stoked to see another regular guy give it a go.

Can't wait to see the first tests. I'm surprised you went to a downwind foil instead of a surf foil.

My gut feeling tells me the 30" width might make it a little difficult to achieve lift off speed. I hope this isn't the case.  How long is the board?

Thanks for the feedback.  I'm feeling a mixture of excitement and uncertainty, and glad the surf season is in full swing so I'm not tempted to wonder about the foil board every day.  :D

Still haven't measured, I think 12' long.  My experience with downwinding is that I paddle faster and with less energy on 30" wide board than I do on a 27-28" wide board.  On those narrower boards so much goes into balance that I fall more, kill my momentum, and I wear myself out.  Adding all that to a foil sounded dangerous, so I erred on the side of stability over speed.  Hopefully I guessed correctly.

Great vid.. It reminds me of the old days of windsurfing with the dagger-board out..  :) .. Try some duct-tape over the slot in the bottom next time..

Here's some new vid showing the low speed high lift sup foil by Naish.. https://www.facebook.com/133760356766483/videos/827527830723062/

Thanks!  Great tip!

Cool to see the naish foil and glad to see the edges aren't as pointy and dagger like as some foils, I'm hoping this will make it safer.

Better yet...I took one of my old beater Tuttle fins from the WS demo fleet and cut the base off to plug the cavity in my custom Hammer foil board when I'm using it as a SUP or WindSUP...;-)

Oh yeah, great idea!   Thanks!

I've done similar on some of my 5 fin boards it works great.

Oh boy!  This whole foil DW thing might be hard.  ;)

So we had strong NW clearing winds yesterday after S winds and a front the day before.  I forgot how messed up the bumps can be in this scenario, usually takes a couple days to get organized and more lined up.   Add to this that I haven't done a downwinder in months and I'm trying a new board for the first time.  Humbling for sure.

So many new or out of the ordinary things happening for me here.  It's to soon to give an accurate assessment, I need a few more runs.  Some guesses:  The tail is big and square and the bumps push it for sure, I am usually on pin tails so this is a new experience.  Also the board is quite flat, not as flat as a race board but the nose still seems to poke often.  Widepoint back, I was standing way behind the handle, over the tuttle, and that seems to be the place to stand when the foil is attached.  At the end in the really small bumps, I stood forward of the handle.  The nose would poke and yet still catch the bump and eventually resurface - felt effortless to glide.

Anyway...that's the report from yesterday.

Here is the video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLU9MFHx7OA

The story I heard with the sailboat is that it hit an underwater pipe and broke off a piece of the keel, drifted for a couple days, and the unusually high tides pushed the boat to where it is in the video.

Nice video, although I wonder, with the apparent ease that the foil lifts the board, is there any reason to use a long board with a foil anymore? Just seems like extra windage and swing weight that will inhibit pumping.
