Anyone been to Mal Pais CR?
« on: November 17, 2016, 06:00:58 AM »
Buddy is looking at going the first week of March to Mal Pais and was looking at going with him. I've never been off the east coast so would be a new adventure for me. I was looking at taking my 10' SUP, but even looking at the airline restrictions have me all confused.

Mal Pais area is great. Access only by dirt road. be prepared to eat a lot of dust and send. It's the dry season so 4x4 is not necessary but recommended (lots of rocks on the road).

Mal Pais village it self is a dump. Santa Teresa is where things are happening.
Great shore break at Playa Carmen. very popular spot but didn't have issues in
the lineup even as a beginner with a sup (not popular as of last year).

The break there was little over my grade though, but great regardless.
10 minutes away (north) you'll find Playa Hermosa which is a good beginner break.

As for renting SUP's, the only game in town is http://sup-costarica.com/Surf-Shop-Mal-Pais.html.

Andy and his local wife Edith (CR sup women champ) are great paddlers and good people. fair prices and some selection. Good local knowledge.

Beginning of March there are still strong off-shore winds so be aware.
in progress...

Looking more and more likely that flying with my 10' SUP will be tough (No on Delta and United) and expensive on American ($150 each way). Does anyone know any shops that rent surf SUP near Mal Pais or close by? The link in the above post doesn't work - thanks

Try JetBlue $50 each way to Costa Rica
