Sharkbanz - Do they work?
« on: November 13, 2016, 04:02:02 PM »
I just saw an ad on FB about these things. I have no idea whether they really work...not that I really feel I need one where I normally paddle but I dig science. ...

They should just build them into the leash ankle strap.
It's not overhead to me!

One question. Do they have an expiration date? In other words, whatever the band is impregnated with to repel sharks, eventually the chemical in the band is going to lose it's effectiveness.

I think from the article title in the video that this is some kind of magnetic field. A big permanent magnetic in a band. Maybe it gives sharks a "chewing on aluminum foil"  feeling in their ampullae of lorenz when they get close. If it's a magnetic effect it may never wear out. Might not stop a feeding frenzy or high speed attack but seemed to deter those bull sharks from free lunch.

Basically a big magnet is inserted in the band.

I've never picked up on the magnet. Somehow I missed that.

I couldn't resist googling and watching it again. I love how it's presented and  done. Short, to the point, non judgmental (judge for yourself).

a bunch of guys got these as a joke last summerwhen "Shoobee's" (Day trippers to Jersey shore) would  ask them about sharks in the water they'd point to the  "Sharkban" Jersesy isn't exactly the epicenter of shark attacks However we have the most double  shark fatalities by the same shark

Total nonsense. Might as well include one of those balance holograms thingies and get a twofer. No, you won't get bit by a shark if you wear one. Because you won't get bit by a shark if you don't.

Yes, it's an easy bet, kind of like selling rubber bracelets that will guarantee you will never win the MegaMillions Lottery...

One of the bothers that started the Power Balance Bracelet company used to live down the street from me. He built a custom home a few years ago. but I don't think he ever moved in. He drove a Sprinter Van with the Power Balance logos on it. Then I noticed he had painted it over with what looked like house paint, and some kinda of trendy logo? The next venture I'm sure.
