I have many interests.

That ad for the bullet would appeal to a person like me who hunts and uses a 3006 SPF caliber rifle with a 22" barrel. I just can't tell if it's a 150 grain or 168 grain soft point bullet. I always favored the 168 bullet.

I imagine there are a lot of hunters that check Surfline. I just wonder if surf companies advertise on hunting websites?

At this point, I think the ads say more about the user than the website.  Aren't sites using algorithms that select ads based on your browsing history & whatever else they can glean off your computer?

Typically I see ads for categories of products that I've recently been researching online.

I agree with you. I'm a registered member on quite a few hunting/archery/fishing/kayaking sites and I see a lot of ads for products which would appeal to me. As an example, I see banner standup paddleboard ads targeted at me on the "BlueCrab.Info" site.

I started to keep my "Manage Website Data" window open when surfing online after I noticed that ads would pop up showing things I had recently looked at. This way I can track the quantity of cookies each websites tries to load on my computer and I regularly dump them. Some sites will dump upwards of forty or fifty at a time. Even this site loads and average of 7 to 12. Since I started dumping them regularly I don't see those types of ads following me around. Probably not a big deal to most, I just don't like the feeling I have someone following me around. :)

Btw, at least with Safari, you may have to dump them a few times to get them out. Many times if you click on "Remove All" it looks like they are gone...but if you wait a bit they pop back in. If you hit RA and immediately click done you will think they are gone but many times they won't be. Occasionally I'll have to hit RA as many as five times to make sure they are gone...they keep popping back in after a bit.

Probably an "Are You Sure?" algorithm... :)

Surf was only 1 -2 foot.
Doheny is protected by the harbor jetty. It only fires with a south swell. We've been having steep north swells which hits Trestles.

I kinda understand how the cookies work, and can see the remnants of my browsing popping up in website ads on other sites. I'm not a hunter (fishing yes), nor do I search hunting or gun sites. I've never seen Surfline run ads that seemed related to my typical search habits. In fact, it's typically a very limited group of ads they run over and over. Maybe Surline is finding a broader revenue source by increasing the amount of cookies, or just using a different algorithm?

Most sites are moving quickly to browsing history related ads--driven by Google and others. Generally it's Adwords getting better, and you data getting shared a lot more--or if not directly shared at least being used to increase delivered ad relevance. It's not just cookies, it's shared visiting data and a lot more intelligence about where your cursor hovered and what you seemed to show interest in. It's not absolute of course--your cursor might have wandered over things you care little about. But now you're branded as a hunter. Happy trails.
