Welcome to my world. On the Turks & Caicos trip I went to Fish Fry with Diane and Lese. We danced as long as the band played. I was spraying sweat but just kept going. Next day the surf was pumping over the reef. I took a nice one and my knee collapsed. Reef drag. I didn't want to say anything, but the next one I went for Kalama was inside of me. He was urging me into the wave when my knee collapsed and I faceplanted on the board. You should have seen his face.  something like "holy shit, what was that?!? I hope that never happens to me!!!"

Looked gnarly. My 9'-11" Ripper woulda been a good choice for that mess.
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Yep, would've definitely been a picture/camera day for me....when I read "interesting" all I can think of is the reference as used by Doc in Finnegan's book "Barbarian Days".

Sunova Creek 9'4"

Nice shot Outcast... you boys chose the better beach that day.
I think our whole issue was a super bad rip... bumped it up so much, that it felt like wind bumps, but I heard you guys scored some!

will let this thread dwindle with Rick's original point being the point...

Absolutely no foul in walking way...it was not a welcoming environment for whatever reason, and i think "Instinct" allows us to sum up a risk/benefit without having to understand it due to 30+ factors : tide/wind/temperature/rips/period....etc

I ended up at CG thinking i would be windsurfing, but made the decision to go before my buds got there, as i knew that an hour later the tide would be closing eveyrthing out.   i had a fatty leash which i checked 80 times, and i can't say enough about having a tail handle... right board, and an understanding that i will pitch the paddle as soon as needed, because swimming with those things suck

so here's a next shot for Jorge...impressive only for the water lumps in the foreground, and then me getting some lumps....I hate knee paddling!, and could pop that section standing, but there was no standing inside..

I was in Northern Cali last week for work and some play and got to check out Ocean Beach in SF on Sat (10/22).  The forecast on Surfline was 11-14ft at 14s.  I'm pretty thankful that I wasn't able to source any gear because it looked like a pretty nasty paddle out at a break I don't know. Finnegan's descriptions of OB in Barbarian days was pretty apt. Fun to watch the 3-4 surfers who made the 20min paddle out catch a few but there are times when staying dry is the right option. At least at my home break at Gilgo I know where the rip is and can usually paddle out dry no matter the size.

Outcast,  that is the biggest baddest east coast paddle surfing shot I have ever seen.  Kudos to you being out there and Hardies photo's.   I would have been on the beach for sure.  A man's got to know his limits ...

Right on Rick!  Thanks for sharing your story and photos.

Usually when I pull up to one of my usual spots and no one is out and/or no cars in the lot the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.  Where is everyone and what do they know that I'm missing?
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

Ahhhh!!! ... oooooo!!! Thanks OC, that's exactly what I was expecting. And I agree, no foul in walking way. Recently spent a week in Guiones ... stayed dry one day. On another, I got lucky and managed to paddle out when many others tried and were turned away, only to end up regretting the entire operation and pray that I could find a way to back in in one piece.

@outcast- I think the 9'11" Ripper is THE most versatile go to board in anything from knee to OH. And it's a gladiator in high wind. Thing is HEAVY! But I can't speak for what Creek was facing that day. Never know til you go!

btw- these are two different 9-11" Rippers. The white was my first that became so delamed that I sold it for 300. The blue is my current which I was lucky enough to find in really good shape for 500 used.
