Gee, should I go surfing today...
« on: October 16, 2016, 03:02:19 PM »
I walked down to 41st Street and nearly got blown off my feet. Strongest winds I have felt in Santa Cruz so far, must have been gusting to at least 50MPH.

Still, saw people going out around Cowells, crazy.

After seeing the photo and since you mentioned people going out in that washing machine like water, it reminded me of an old saying which is, "Fools rush in where Angels fear to tread".

Really liking the new Cowells Overview HD camera.
Its all white suds again today.

For those who don't know, not only do we have big storm surf,
but we also have a red tide - the combination is making it very sudsy.

On Saturday I was driving home and stopped at the statue on West Cliff.  Looked very rideable, winds was under 20 knots and sun was out.  Grabbed my 8'10 and peddled back to the statue.  Wind was gusting, sky was dark and sprinkles of rain.  almost took out a tourist as the wind grabbed the board.  Took me 5 minutes to find the right time to paddle out and still banged onto a rock when the water was sucked back out and it went from chest high to knee height.  Get out and it is choppy, go further up towards Middle Peak and its super rough.  Drift down to Cowells and getting sucked over the falls a few times.  Finally catch a left and heave and bounce but ride it.  Lets do it again!   After a beating to get out I catch another left but never get in balance.  Try to get out again but its lots of work.  Finally, drag myself out of the water and look down from West Cliff and think.

It looks so rideable.  I should go surfing.

Yup, Saturday looked like 99 percent pain for 1 percent gain.  There was a lot of random wave stuff going on, but for the people out there didn't look like a lot of surfing going on for the energy in the water.  The paddle out looked punishing.

Sunday was strictly for the typhoon addled few.

Red Tide sounds ominous.  Crappy colored waves and suds.  Hope schools of dead surfers don't start washing up.

The water has had the newly administered enema look to it since last Monday.  And on Saturday it smelled like it.  I think the septic tanks overflowing into the river it will be very nasty for a few days.  Still it looks like it could be good this evening.  And being so far above the water might minimize the danger.

Yes, I think I think I'll go surfing

MAYBE, I will get back out by Wed PM when back in SC, and hopefully the toilet bowl will have flushed and cleared a bit.

It reminds me of my days  up there in the 70's going to school at SJSU, we were Valley for sure.  Everywhere we went we saw Valley gO Home painted on rocks  stairs and  any stationary object. yet  after we drove 45 minute to  SC  we went surfing.   Our term was "victory at sea" which I think came from an old John Wayne movie.  but who knows?

What a difference two days make. There was a school of whales also in the background blowing steam.

It's back to semi-normal today. Still a bit of orange tint to the water, but way better than it was.
