Where does design go from here?
« on: September 20, 2007, 08:04:58 PM »
I think shapers will test the limits of thickness. Am I wrong or are we at the limit with 4 inches? I also believe that rocker will be changed some.

What are your thoughts?

Aloha

I just got a board that's 8'10 x 3.5" thick.

Boots, don't be cruel, send photos  :-X

Hi Byron,

Bill Foote is shaping some mean board's under 4 thick.  The other Randy (who you mentioned recently) is riding one http://www.lightningboltmaui.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=851 as is Slater Trout http://www.lightningboltmaui.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=850.  Chan's 9'1 is in the 3 3/4 range as well.

What is really interesting to me is how to distribute thickness for float and paddle speed, but keep the tail, rails, and nose, surfboard thin.

Here's one photo, maybe i'll try get a profile shot...

I created the outline, my dad and I shaped it in a friends shop with some help from him. It's not epoxy, but it floats us fine and isn't too horribly heavy because it's still a small SUB.
Super stable compared to  our 23.5" wide longboards...

Cramped room, hard to get a good profile...
The nose and tail could be thinned out a little more, but whatever, so far it rides great.
It's a pretty pulled in nose so I think the thickness really helps it for noseriding. It accelerates really well when your up forward and it noserides surprisingly well.

Looks like a really fun board.  Anything that you would change?

The tail kick is kinda extreme, maybe smooth out the rocker there. Give the nose a slight more rocker, maybe thin the tail out. Only ridden it in weak waves and so far it's really fun. Hopefully it works as well in so bigger/better surf, I think it'll go alright. I've heard good things about quads, it'd be interesting to try one of them for the next board.

How's the board for a 130-pound beginner?  Or should he stick with longer SUBs?

Find a used Munoz softtop. Cheap, bulletproof should be great for someone your size. Then wittle it down to a 6'2 SUF (stand up fish). I wish I was that small... sigh
