Surely even if you asked the boy selling pots by the roadside in Indonesia about this video he'd have seen it already?

It was very good of DJ to post it, so we could learn from his mistake. And I should say, before everyone starts criticising him (yet again...) that there was a context to him not wearing one on this occasion, and that he is in fact a strong advocate for leash use when downwinding.

Sorry about that. I didn't know it had already been posted and there's no delete button. I should have searched better before posting. Dangit, second time I did that recently!  ???

dj, i hate to say this but you are a dumbass!  ;D damn good downwinder though.  i will say that if what happened to you a few years ago happened to me i would wear a leash on dry land just so i would not forget it when i got in the water.

I'd say DJ is more of a smartass, generally.    ;D

The great thing about this video, especially knowing the story behind it, is how undramatic everything was--just a series of small mistakes of the sort everyone makes that might have added up to nothing bad at all if even one hadn't occurred, or if a wave hadn't hit just right, etc.  Instead, events combined  in a 1-in-10000 way to create a mess.

Also, the whole string of events was started by an interruption in his prep routine--again, something we're all familiar with, having all done things like locking keys in the car, forgetting something at the store, etc. because our routine got altered.

It reminds me how a major cause of drowning is people falling out of boats while peeing--nothing dramatic.  Who knows how many people would have avoided death simply by making a pit stop before going out?

You mean something like this might happen? Some dumbass might leave his truck wide open when he goes on a Maliko run??

No, it's not underwater. Frank Forbes shot the picture with his camera in a water-corrected case.

I've returned to my car more than once recently to find my surflock closed and securely locked to my roofrack, with my car keys sitting out in the open on top of it!  :-[

We used to leave the car doors unlocked in high-theft areas on Maui just so some f*cker didn't throw a rock through the window. Of course we didn't leave anything of value in the car...

You are obviously not a beer drinker.   :)

Usually it's novice boat captains who let people pee over the side.

Eventually they learn to carry a container on board to pee in such as a plastic pitcher, thus avoiding balancing on the rail, falling overboard, falling into the boat, peeing on yourself, peeing on your friends, looking like a fool exposing yourself to other boats, etc.

Don't forget to have a five gallon bucket on hand for the ladies.

Ha Ha. The 5 gallon bucket is so the women can sit down. It's not necessarily proportionate to the size of their bladder.
