Mace training to help your SUP'ing?
« on: September 06, 2016, 11:19:50 AM »
I took up Mace training a while back to help strengthen my shoulder girdle and core as a supplement to my Martial Arts Training...specifically for FMA. It really has helped bring up the strength, flexibility, and power in my strikes. The side note is its helped out a lot in my SUP'ing as well. The main thing is I have more power in my strokes from the core and my shoulders aren't getting as fatigued as they have in the past.

I was just curious if anyone else here has tried it?

One of my students has been training with them for years and he turned me on to them. Some exercises I work are standard ones, and some I've modified slightly to work a little more directly with elements of my MA training. Both ways have benefited my paddling.

Indian clubs are something I also look forward to trying out.

Throw in a balance ball with something like that and seems like a great training routine.

Looks like it might come in handy after the zombie apocalypse. Or maybe if Trump gets elected.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

I think the treadmill and rake defense work better...  :)

Now there is an idea!

PS: If anyone is interested, this is one exercise that I've modified slightly (and the only one I've video taped so far) with side-stepping footwork as well as the "pull down" with elbow pinned and the mace handle 90 degrees to the forearm. The twist works the core while the pull-over, pause in static position before rotating back to the other side and repeating works all the arm, shoulder, and upper back muscles (as well as balance). Part one of two, but two is more about how the movement helps/works in application. Again, I'm finding there is a lot of cross-over benefit to SUP'ing.
