Hand blisters during a long paddle.
« on: August 23, 2016, 02:10:34 PM »

Doing a 30 mile paddle this coming weekend. Will be a long day out. Should be ready. My only worry is blisters. I don’t blister much during the season. Has happened early season and a few weekends ago where I did 2 consecutive days of about 15 miles paddling, but all on one side. (quartering wind)

Will take a small roll of 3M Micropore surgical tape with me. Nothing else planned. Any other tips of something to bring along just in case blisters start?

This week should I be putting cream on my hands? Or leave them dry?

Not so keen on gloves. Even for windsurfing. Been doing the HTFU route for years. Lighter! (how's that for a weight weenie response?)

Anyway I'd need to test them out and it's too late for that. Thanks for the tip, I will try gloves one day if my hands end up a mess.

meanwhile...

If the choice is between raw, painful, open blisters that get worse by the minute, or gloves, you'll get used to the " that doesn't hurt" feeling of gloves pretty quick

Check out Grease Monkey Gorilla Grips at Home Depot.  Thin breathable fabric, with thin rubberized palm and underside of fingers.  Been using them for a few years.  I love them.  Cheap too.  $4 to $5 per pair.  I just started a thread on this topic recently too.  Check out the topic "Blisters" for more info.

A paddling session encompassing 30 miles is a long session. Take the tape and a pair of gloves with you. When it comes to gloves, just remind yourself of an old adage which says; "Better to have them and not need them, than to need them and not have them".  ;)

When paddling, you will have an upper hand and a lower hand. When ever possible, ensure that the TOP HAND is always open. This will reduce most chances of getting a blister. Another trick is to relax the lower hand as well.
