jimmy Lewis water from gore valve?
« on: August 17, 2016, 08:44:08 PM »
Had my new JL Stun gun out in my yard after long session today and noticed a bit of salt water coming out of valve onto e deck

Does that mean I have a leak?

Next steps?

yes, either the membrane is compromised or the O-ring is not seated properly.   Once saltwater gets into the plug it's best to replace it regardless, as the membrane won't work if it has salt plugging the pores.  Take out the plug, let the board dry out completely and replace the plug.

how hard is it to do? my board is a few years old and I thought to do it but Rogue told to better not touch.

Is it a question of the right valve and the right tools? I might just do it this coming winter.

Bigger question is how to get the board properly dry
My experience with salt water in boards is this is a problem

You can also watch two sweaty guys talking all about vent plugs on this episode of Board Meeting:

I've never had a Goretex product that didn't leak. Not ever.

Much better membranes out there these days. I'm baffled that the industry is using Goretex.

My best wet weather gear nowadays uses eVent. Makes Goretex performance look like its from the Stone Age  8)

UK, do you know of other passive vent brands that use a non-Gore membrane?  I sure don't.

Plus, in this case as with most, it's likely that it's a cross thread or o ring issue as much as a membrane issue.

The Advice given to me on passive vents was, leave it alone unless there is an issue.

Another way to test a vent plug rather than blowing air though it like we saw in the video might be to fill the plug with water and see if the water passes through, or if you wanted to get more elaborate, you could create a container into which you could install the plug and fill the container with water. If the plug drips, it's no good.

Of course by the time you realize there is a problem, it's too late. Once water enters the board, you will never get it all out. The draining/drying process may take weeks or months.

The vent membrane can also become clogged with salt resulting in a delam.

I'm sure if these were common problems we would be hearing all kinds of horror stories, yet it still seems like a gamble. A small percentage of those who have Goretex vents will at some point have problems with their boards and lose surf time due to vent failure.

All three of my boards have Gore vents and I often worry about whether the vents are working properly. Every time I pick one up, I wonder if it feels heavier.

A vent leak isn't quite as nasty a thing as a leaking ding, which is usually below the waterline. I kept forgetting to close the drain plug on an old Naish I have. Probably did it twenty times (horrible memory, especially when I'm looking at nice waves. In all those times it didn't pick up even a half pound over the weight when I first got it.
