Here is a video we made showing the effectiveness of leash use on flat water.
Hope it helps.

This is a great video for anyone who is coming to the sport of standup paddling concerning the importance of a leash.

Well done vid.  I have a suggestion, if you are interested.  Why not do this on a day where conditions, wind or current would move the board away from you?  Show them a worst case scenario of someone struggling to get to their board.   This vid didn't show potential consequences; only a little extra trouble to get your board, and it can end way worse than that.

This is already in the works - this is just part 1.

Good idea. Show some clips from the Maliko Run vid with the boards flying away.
That will scare the crap out of anyone. Did for me!

imagine that scenario on a river with the current moving at a leisurely 3 knots?  or on a lek with the wind coming up  you would never  catch your board.

Tack DJ's downwind run on the end of yours...the one where his board got away from him when he wasn't wearing his leash...that will shut the mouth of the clueless "I'm a fast swimmers, I can catch it before it gets out of reach" blowhard.

A lot of people think if they fall they will just fall beside their board and just grab it.. or quickly swim to it..

But you can't control how you fall off.. and swimming fast to it will not work in strong wind or current..

@DJ

That looked like a harrowing experience. Although the video doesn't show it, I'm glad to see you and your partner were able to retrieve your boards and paddles in those rough wind and water conditions. That is the worst wind and water conditions I've ever seen you tackle.

Well said.  Not to mention it's hard to swim fast with a paddle in your hand.

Cool video. If you like, I can shoot some supporting video for you to edit in here in the gorge.  If there's anywhere (other than Maliko) where you board goes away in a hurry, it's here.
