Dinged Through my RailSaver
« on: July 20, 2016, 07:29:15 AM »
Here is a little ding from a paddle strike that went right through my RailSaver (Puka Patch) on my Jimmy Lewis Black and Blue Machine.  Once I fix the ding I will replace the Puka Patch tape with RS Pro.

Wow.  That is too bad Bean.

Hmmm, how much worse do you think it would have been without the Puka Patch tape?

I've got the RS Pro on mine - no problems so far.

I put some clear duck tape around the rest of the board
with two layers on the nose and on the tail.  Its all
crinkly on the curve of the nose, but I doubt it affects
surfing performance at all.

Good point Subber, I've had the board out for many sessions now and this is the only ding that has penetrated.

Not sure but you might have a situation when the time comes to remove the clear Duck Tape. It's not the same as rail tape or helicopter tape.

Yep, I was concerned that I could be creating a different problem with the duck tape.
So, I did a little test area for a month before I put it on the rest of the board (where there was no RS Pro).
Wanted to make sure it would come off easily.

Its been on for about eight months now.  Some of it has peeled off - it isn't really that sticky.
Also, it seems that it has hardened or stiffened a bit - not as clear....so that it is less pliable and does
seem to tear off easily, kind of like paper, if I want to remove it.  Little to no residue - but something
I was concerned about.  I've re-applied some areas.

The RSP is to protect from paddle strokes and also from setting the board on its edge,
up on the leash, coiled.  The duck tape is for anything else.
I keep the board in a van and the nose often rubs as does the tail - it just fits...now, I also
use a bit of cut conduit insulation on the nose in the van where it rests against the console.

I have banged the board a few times on the duck taped areas and I was glad I had a little extra protection -
- no problems so far - of, course, I've not looked under the duck tape but it is still clear enough
so that I think I can see no damage.

The duck tape was very cheap...like $6 for a big roll.
I think the downside is that the sun cooks it and it gets a bit brittle, loses a bit of clarity,  the adhesive loses
its strength a bit....so you have to reapply eventually.....but no big deal.  I just keep a roll in the van.
I was glad I had it the times I banged a non-RSP-covered area.

Love the RS Pro on the rails too.
