I grew up with a friendly neighborhood beaver(s). I fished off their house and could stand 10 feet away, across a canal perfectly copacetic.  Then one day I was fishing and it came around the back of the beaver hut.  Started coming at me and then charged.  I ran like the wind not realizing they only have a 5 foot charge radius.

Brought my dog Mr. Mick Vicker, a Westy Terrier, he was a trusty fishing buddy.  He decided to stay back during a later episode.  I ran and heard them tussling.  He ended up with a gash in his neck the size of a silver dollar.  Just a love bite.

No rabies, just babies.  That's all it takes to go from friendly neighbor to charging beast.

Ward, do you think you were being a little rough on the beaver last night?

Gee, I'm glad I didn't title it "Wet Rabid Beavers".

Time for the PC Patrol to check in.

"Leave It to Beaver: Wally, the Lifeguard (#4.4)" (1960)

Theodore Cleaver: [Beaver, on the telephone, talking about Wally's new job as a lifeguard at Friends Lake]
And if we guys go up there, we can see Wally bein' a lifeguard, and touch him, and smell him and everything... Now listen, Gilbert, don't you go callin' up all the guys and tellin' about my brother's new job. He's *my* brother, and I got dibs on braggin' him up.

Theodore Cleaver: [Wally is too young to take the lifeguard job he was looking forward to, so he takes a job selling hot dogs and sodas at Friends Lake]
Y'know Wally, I just been thinkin' - maybe tomorrow when you're sellin' hot dogs on the beach, all the other lifeguards'll be out rescuin' people, and there'll be this girl, and she'll start drownin', and you'll throw away your hot dogs and swim out and save her in front of all the people.
Wally Cleaver: Aw, cut it out, Beav. You know that's not gonna happen.
Theodore Cleaver: Yeah. And even if it did, on account of you're not 18, you'd have to throw her back.
It takes a quiver to do that.

That's funny.  So is "beat the beaver off her". Do you think the reporter was laughing like a fool when he wrote that?

I live in Asheville, but I never go to Beaver Lake.  It's a small, privately owned lake in town, with water that I wouldn't even let my dog swim in.  I would never paddle board on that lake.  I do hope the beaver wasn't rabid, though, since a lot of people walk their dogs around the lake.
