True Ames side bite fins for my Flow
« on: May 21, 2016, 07:09:53 AM »
So I wasn't feeling it with the Flow in how I want a board to ride.  Going frontside I like to crank a bottom turn and proceed to step back a little then do s-turns down the line.  Going on the backhand I take off more on an angle and crank s-turns and cutbacks which are easier for me on the backhand.  I don't have to do anything else on a wave, what I described gives me the most satisfaction.  Something with the flow was holding me back so I installed 3.25" True Ames side bites, been out the past two mornings in clean 2-3ft waves and have had a blast! Board does it now!  Very happy!

I'm going to keep this setup for now, I'm wondering if I'll need a slightly longer center fin for bigger days?  Bigger surf in the forecast for tomorrow and Monday...

Run it as a quad.  it will really open it up- especially in Jersey.

I run my pocket rocket as a quad and until I did it felt like it had an anchor in the thruster setup on fast NJ swell.

People think thruster for fast and hollow- and that i feel is the way to go on shortboard surfboards.  But on a slow sup- the quad will get you down the line faster- Esp. on a 9ft+ flow.

Just my opinion but worth a try.    The GL1 quads are SUP specific quads and really do the trick on big boards like that

thanks NJS. Unfortunately, one of the quad fin boxes will not let the fin seat flush so I'm stuck with the thruster setup.  Unless, I sand down the fin base.

Fix, clean out your base slot.

That's what I was thinking. It doesn't make sense that it came from the factory with a defect like that. It's probably something fixable.

First thing I'd do is measure the depth of the slot and compare it to the fin tab. I'll bet it's just some plastic from the screw hole or something.

I've got my 8'4 set up as quad with four #94 flatfoils all the same size and it rocks. The 105's that came with it were too big.

Badger, do you have your custom 8'10 Flow yet? If so, what fin set up are you running on that board?

Great thread. This summer I'm experimenting to seek the best setup to get the most out of the least.

I've dropped from the thruster setup on my 10" to a single fin for more glide and less drag and it has helped.

Next experiment is to drop the quad on on the 8"8" Sharpe and retry the twin setup to see if it'll perform in the mush. I tried it previously and it was a little difficult paddling out, but with the current ease of getting out, it should be OK.

Forecast is for 2 - 3 over the next few days, so conditions should be ideal for summertime experimentation.

The 8'10 is also set up as quad. Right now, I have 105 flatfoils on the front with two fullfoil 94 center fins on the back. I haven't tried it with this set up yet. The 8'10 is a much bigger board so it just might work, but I'm thinking I'll probably have to buy a proper FCS set for it once I figure out what I want. I'll give these a try in the meantime. Then I'll try the fins from the 8'4 and see how they go.
