booties
« on: April 19, 2016, 07:27:31 PM »
Wear booties but they are surfing booties and they have som kind of reinforcing ban that goes under the arch  near the heel  , after 15 -30 minutes they kill my feet

Anyone know of some brands that don't  do this .  i wear em and I not stopping mainly because my feet are pretty  wrecked  and the pad tears them up worse.

The ones I have now are ripcurls   i tried those three  toe things could get them on  just too stiff.
suggestions?

Me and my buddies use the 3mm Excel Drylock Round Toe Boots.  We used them all this winter probably down to about 37 degrees (3 C).  We love them.  It's nice to be able to wear 3 mm on a SUP instead of the 5 or 7 mm we used to use on our longboards.

I wear O'neill Superfreak 2mm split toe booties always when I surf. I've been wearing them for years. My feet aren't as tough as they use to be. When I was a kid, I could walk over the rocks on the railroad tracks barefoot on the way to the beach with out feeling a thing. Now days, If don't wear them I'll get little cuts on the bottom of my feet from either the reef, or just crap in the sand. Then I have to stay out of the water for at least a week to let it heal. Since I started wearing the Superfreak's, no problems. They grip the board fine for surfing. I don't even notice I have them on.

I always wear booties and really like the same ones that TallDude does, but in the round toe version.   Just can't find the damn things here locally, so I've gone back to my Vibrams with the separated toes just because I have them in the car.  Their fine for SUPing, but for prone surfing the leash occasionally gets jammed between my toes--yes, kook event, but it happens to me.  Round toe preferable for prone surfing.

Agree with the math too:  One cut on the foot equaling several days out of the water just does not compute.

When I wear them, I wear superfreaks. My feet are constantly cut up, if I waited for them to heal I'd never be in the water. I just keep my immune system on high alert. If it ever rebels and shuts down I'll dissolve like some horror scify thing.

For what it's worth, I have found that compression socks work fine for cushioning my feet and don't slide on pads or wax. But you have to have a certain panache to wear them. Kind of a geezer homeless look that I've been pioneering.

I wear the superfreaks without the split toe.  Have a number of pair with the split toe but the ones without are like not wearing anything at all and offer super protection against rock and reef cuts.  I don't always wear them at breaks with mostly sand on the way out.

Pono, you really need to find an appropriate kook cap to go with the yoga socks.

on booties:
I love these--minimal footbed and no strapping, velcro, etc to pain the feet when on knees. Pictured are my winter boots--they come in 3 mm too.

My booties will pick-up sand walking on the beach. If I'm SUS'g I'll paddle out, sit in the line-up and clear the sand out of them. If I'm prone surfing, I'll clear them in the shallows like putting on fins.

I have been using diving boots for the winter.  They are so thick and rugged, they haven't worn out in the couple of years I have had them, though they get a little sloshy.

My Patagonia wool lined are the warmest and most like actual feet, but the wool makes them really hard to put on and take off.  I only use them when really cold, because they probably are "one season" boots because of the thin soles.

I'll probably be graduating into spring/summer shortie wetsuit, so I will go down to O'Neill's to get a pair of short top shoe types.  I want to try them and look at them, so I guess I will have to pay the premium rather than buying the cheap ones from ebay.

I only wear boots very rarely--like 1 or 2 times a year when it's super cold.  I've landed on the SUPreme Power Phase Boots.  No split toes--for some reason my big toe ends up really really sore when I wear split toe booties.  Uncommonly so.  Even when they don't feel that tight going on.  I've wondered why that is--circulation?  But don't wear booties enough to want to figure it out.

I don't always wear booties, but when I do, I prefer 5 Fingers.
