Maui SS Downwind 3-19-2016
« on: April 13, 2016, 03:07:15 PM »
Did couple of south side runs on my last Maui trip. Big shout out to Bill Boyum for making it all happen and keeping an eye on the forecast for me. It was very nice to personally meet Bill Babcock as well as Brian Szymanski.

Great video!

I really like the different points of shooting and capturing other paddlers from the side to help give a sense of speed. That is really nice.

You scored some good conditions when you were here. I think this was the same day as the race from the canoe club down to Makena and conditions were close to perfection that day.

Just for perspective, yesterday we started from the canoe club and had a 30 mph downwinder for 3 miles, then it turned around and blew out of the south, straight at us, at about 15 to 20. Lucky for me, I went in my OC1. The guys on the standups all had to scratch in to the Cove. It wasn't much fun paddling upwind to Sorrentos but at least I made it. 8) Point is, you hit some outstanding conditions. Thanks for the vid!

Great perspective, can I ask what you used to shoot that vid?  Filters, settings, etc.

Thank you Covesurfer! We were really lucky to score those perfect conditions. Maliko didn't cooperate this year for me so maybe next time - when I move to Maui :)))))

Thanks Bean. I used GoPro Hero 4 Black to shoot this video. Suction cup was used to mount the camera to the board as well my new favorite accessory swivit (lets you rotate the camera 360 - very handy). All was shot in 4K (4k really looks nice), protune set to ON, with white balance set to auto, color to gopro and high sharpening. No filters involved. Used Final Cut Pro X to put it all together.

Thanks, 4k is what I'm missing with my Session.  But, I will have to check out the Swivit.

Suction cup was used to mount the camera to the board ...

Have you ever had an issue with the suction cup mount coming off?  Seems ideal for a board you don't want to or can't glue something to, but wondering if it is really reliable in water.

It has been really reliable for me so far. I also use tether to attach the whole thing to the sic handle (gotta love their handles) as a precaution. I only knocked the suction cup off the board once when I fell forward - but it was really stupid fall on my part. I think i am going to use the gopro surf mount + gooseneck extension on my personal board and resort to suction cup use on rentals.

Awesome video. Really shows the whole "vibe and glide" thing well. Also the different angles are good, especially the side shots. Inspiring what you can do with one GP with a swivel. :)

I approve.  I honestly wish I would have thought about something like this back when I last visited Maui in 07 (really the only time I was in Maui).  Though at the time I really didn't give SUP a thought (and it was in full swing on the island) I really knew nothing about downwind.  Ironically I spent a good amount of time in Kihei.

Sweet video.  I like the multiple angles and all around cool video, sharpness and color really pop.

FYI - the gopro adhesive mounts can be removed in a minute or two with a flat scraper and a few drops of oil.  Every time I have tried it there is no residue or any sign that the mount was ever there.  There is an old how to video on YouTube.
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

That was a nice day. Sveta certainly got the hang of downwinding quickly. You would have enjoyed today--gusts to 50 MPH, crazy conditions, changing every hundred yards. sometimes the waves got blown flat and it was high speed groomed swell, and then when you got really flying there were big rollers in the deep water to drop into. I got going so fast my rudder quit working and my board was sliding in the tail. I was steering by poking my paddle up at the nose.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

So jealous of you guys!  When I move to Maui I will probably become one of those downwind nut cases  ;) Always wondered what it would feel like to downwind in 50mph winds  :o
