RSPro does it again with Deck protection
« on: March 29, 2016, 07:06:47 AM »
Looks Like Rail Saver Pro has come up with another great product, this time Deck Coverage called HexaTraction. Looks like the need for a heavy, bulky deck pad is behind us. Can't wait to see some reviews of this product.

Here are some highlights:

Benefits & Specifications:
•Temperature independent front foot board grip & traction for surf and SUP boards (and kite and ...)
•Light, thin, and doesn't absorb water.
•No melting, no hassle, no residues, no contamination.
•Non-Aggressive to your skin.
•Super-easy to install modular configuration.
•Clear, translucent, so it doesn't cover your board graphics.
•UV protection and waterproofing for your board deck.
•Automotive, RSPro® quality.
•Design & manufacturing in Barcelona.

Specifications: •1 kit (box) is composed by 18 full hexagons and 4 half hexagons. Each hexagon ø16cm (6.3") in size and is composed by dozens of micro-hexagons that offer the grip and traction needed for watersports. The kit (box) comes with a HexaTraction star shaped template to make installation even easier and more pro looking.

Looks very promising, at $65 per kit (box) x 3 = a spendy $195 for 3/4 SUP coverage.   Also keep in mind that most production boards are pretty rough under the pad area.  But, for a custom board, I'd definitely consider it.  Maybe when it comes time to replace the pad on my Phoenix.

Another similar product that has been around for many years is Versatraction.
Versatratction looks to be a bit cheaper.

Performance of Versatraction and the Rail Saver Pro product might be somewhat different.

I've got Versatraction on the nose of my Laird.
Note, it becomes slippery if you get any sunscreen near it.

I found the traction alone wasn't quite good enough when running to the nose for a noseride,
so, I added thin 3/8th inch strips of regular traction about every five inches - that did the
trick.  So, I've got good traction with minimal weight.

Pearson Laird Surftech Longboard 10'6"x23"x29.75"x18"x4.375," 154 liters, 24 lbs, 3 boxes
Takayama Ali'i II Surftech 11'x21.375”x28.5”x17.25”x 4.25,” 162 liters, 26 lbs, 3 boxes

Yes the Fangtail. When i was shaping with Michael Peterson back in the early 70's we were into those. They're actually a great tail !

Bump.  Any updates from anyone who's used the RS Pro Hexatraction?  I've got a new 9'6" longboard-style L41 on the way and was considering going with a no pad option.  A friend had wax on his and it felt great but I reaaalllyy don't like the mess since I keep my boards in my car at work and I hate getting them in/out of a bag.  I love the RS Pro rail tape but their deck traction is pretty pricey...

I just received a kit of Hexatraction so I'll report back soon :-)  My initial install will be on the areas that I currently wax which is all of the deck minus a 13" long by 18" wide section of pad where I stand.

Thanks Ralph, great service and quick shipping :-)  Here's a couple photos of my install.  My initial thoughts after installing (haven't ridden yet) are that I don't think the Hexatraction will grip very well, it just doesn't feel very grippy.  I hope I am wrong.   I only installed the Hexatraction on the areas that I currently wax.  My plan is to replace the main white pad if the Hexatraction grips well.    Photo 1: Before.  Photo 2: Proposed Layout.  Photo 3: Phase 1 installed.   Photo 4: Phase 1 installed showing how invisible the traction is from most angles.   I'll report back on grip performance once I have some sessions on it.
