If you're consistently falling off the back try standing just a little more forward. Sometimes the sweet spot is small and a slight shift forward will allow the weight on the heels to not be such an issue

We have sea snakes that sneak up under your board and pull one rail down. They are silent and you don't see them coming at all. You can be standing there for 10 minutes, and all of a sudden one rail is getting sucked under, and kersplash! It is the weirdest thing. :)

Ahhh!  That explains everything!  Those blasted sea snakes.

I notice that when my spine of my back is concave weight tends to shift to my heels and I fall off the back. Maintaining a slight convexity in my spine helps keep my weight forward on the balls of my feet, where it should be.  That and keeping my hands in front of my body and bending my knees help in maintaining balance. I am new to SUP and try to relate balance to cross-country skiing, a sport with which I have decades of experience. SUP balance seems to me to be quite similar to balance in cross-country skiing, and especially similar to skiing downhill on skinny racing skis where, instead of a paddle, you use poles to help with balance. Also, in both sports you need to look where you are going and not at your feet (or ski tips).

Early posting wisdom from a boy-named-SPLAT.  I fondly remember XC-skiing, just north of Toronto..when the earth was cold.

that happens to me when i get tired and i stop bending my knee and stand up straight. especially when it is lumpy i need to keep the knees loose like mini shock absorbers.
