average speed....
« on: September 17, 2007, 02:46:37 PM »
what do you guys figure is your average speed when point to point paddleing(not racing) just cruising.  I paddled from cardiff to swamis the other day roundtrip and was suprised at how fast I seemed to have accomplished this....I know its not that far, but in college I steered a 6 man oc in newport beach and I swear I remember racing around lido island an thinking "this seems to be taking awhile" maybe its a much farther trip though...

We did Maui to Kaunakakai (Molokai) in 4.75 hrs. That's 26-27 mi. We were cruising and stopping to refill our hydration butt packs. And with a good wind.

The other day I did 9.6 mi. in 1:46, flat water on a JL 11'7 which is fast on flat water.

On my usual, across K-Bay, it is 1.2 mi. and will take anywhere from 10-14 mins. depending on the wind.

The wind really makes all the difference, is it at your front or back.

i completed the 7 ¼ mile flatwater classic on the chicago river in 3 ½ hours. when looking at the course map it would seem that by going south on a tributary towards a large body of water (lake michigan) that you are heading downstream. the truth of the matter is that the river's flow has been engineered to run backwards. it turned out to be against the current with a head wind so the ½ mph was rate of speed was not unusual. i wasn't racing... but at the same time it wasn't the relaxing paddle one might be led to believe. it was a bit of a battle, i did take some water and snack breaks along the way, and it has left me a tad bit exhausted.

side note: the participants were also allowed to be part of a study to observe the effects of recreation on the river. as one of the lab rats, i answered a questionnaire and will be contacted on days following the event to see if there was any adverse repercussions from contact with the water.

Hiya All, i've been paddle'n for 4 months now and i've found a comfortable rythum nets me 4 to 5 mph---this is what i use as a "before work-workout"!!! i was out on a friends boat and he measured my take off point and once around the "Island" at Dana Point Harbor and back at 2.2 miles. so i am now regulary going twice around in 55min. Again this is a "comfortable rythum" for me not a race or cruise either way. i've paddled from the "harbor" to Capo- reef and back but really diden't keep track of time or distance---just had an enjoyable paddle 8)   oh yea that measurment was with  GPS fix!!!!
