2016 SB all star (14x23) fin box to short for d.ching fin
« on: December 26, 2015, 04:58:30 AM »
I received 2016 SB all star (14x23) few day ago and noticed that my d.ching fin does not fit the fin fox- its to short. the same issue with my friend's 2016's sprint and all star 14x25. i used FCS spitfire fin instead. anybody else has the same issue?

Hello!
I think that Larry Allison's SUP Race Fins in Click-it version will fit into Starboard's new shorter boxes.

I am no help at all other then to commiserate. That stinks. On the last two waves boards I have had the fins needed a bunch of sanding to get in the fun boxes. The first board I was using GL quads and the next board I was using the stock fins(very nice fins) but I mean the stock fins did not fit the boxes without lots of sanding. I was so grateful I was not trying to install them at the beach with watching sets roll in while I am fucking around with the sandpaper.

Simple, buy a new fin.  Plus, if you're light enough to paddle the 14' x 23", the DC fin is too big anyway.  Lot's of better fins to choose from.  How about a review on your 14' x 23"?

as for rewiew of the board... i dont feel competent enough as i consider myself as recreational peddler. i'll try to write my impression of the board soon.

Seems like a major oversight for such a prominent SUP company. Is the fin slot short on the 27 and 28" wide All Star as well? I imagine it would be.

I think so. This pic is from an Allstar 2016. Don't know the width...

The Bat Wing is made that way and it suits very short boxes :)

It is done on purpose to eliminate the fin box "gaps", which are viewed as slowing the board. Obviously in doing so some long base fins will no longer work. Win some, lose some.

yugi, I'm sure it's done on purpose but I doubt the "gaps" argument holds any water. ;)
It looks like they changed their lineup for an 8" fin box so they can sell you their own fins.

This new fin box is conspicuously absent from their dedicated fin boxes webpage. http://star-board-sup.com/2016/fin-boxes/
It's not the first time I'm reading about it. Not a great user experience :(
in progress...

I had that same problem with my old Exocet board. It had a puny fin box and only the small factory fin fit. I don't understand that kind of design. It seems quite limiting.

I think you are right. They want to sell some extra gear too.

Is that really true or is it just a myth or is that has only an effect of 0.01 km/h and should be considered immaterial?
Just curious as there has been a gap like this for years on thousands of boards.
I noticed that Infinity is providing "plugs" for their multi-fins Blackfish model for fin boxes not in use.

Cheers,

Gaps in your board will suck in water at speeds starting around 15 miles a hour on water like windsurfing. But here in this video a friend did for me looks like it doesn't hold water to me. Funny thing this is a older Starboard that this video is being done on.

Yes I do offer box plugs for multiple fin set-ups for the mind thinkers that feel the need.

Wow!!!! GlideMarko, I know how hard it is to make that look clean, putting the hole in the fin like that. Insane job my friend! Nice Work!
