Jpeter, yes. Resort skiing is canned and controlled, especially in the states. But look at how many people will go and slide down the same green run right in front of the lodge or hit the park all day and ignore the more advanced and natural runs further in.

Also think of all the 100 yard tall local hills that people ski a dozen times a year and then take their yearly trip to Vail.

Lol I stand corrected, Hickory Hills has 240 feet of vertical.

I see these as the same thing. Next year I'll meet you guys at the one at the mall in Rancho Cucamonga for a Cinnabon and Latte after our shred sesh and we will no longer have to discuss it... We will be the kookiest sport ever. ;)

Gripe and grouse all you want, but Easy Rider likely wouldn't have near as much fun on Namotu without his mall wave to practice on.

surfcowboy--this is something that's almost impossible not to joke about, but you're right, if you put it in the proper context--that it's not a replacement for ocean surfing--then it really has some potential, especially inland where the choice is this or no surfing at all.  I feel the same way about pools vs. open water swimming--poor substitute, but certainly better than nothing.  I also thought immediately of Easy Rider in his mall--he's said tons of people who learn there end up going on surfing vacations, made possible by being introduced to it and practicing it at the mall.  Public ones (due to high usage) would also reduce the environmental irony of taking something nature gives away for free and turning it into an energy-sucking contraption.

Of course at a public wave pool you'd still have the people cutting in in the line, snaking you for a parking space, etc. to make the experience authentic.

Throw in a few bull sharks and he can make it just like home in Florida.  ;)

And I am one of those guys that pays big bucks to snowboard at resorts in Mammoth, Oregon, and Colorado. ;)

I say put these wave parks up all over the place and especially on the coast and maybe less people will bother going in the ocean.

It's definitely in Lemoore. I grew up there and the reason for the nasty looking water is that's just how it looks when it's pumped out of the ground.

Yeah, put a bunch in Silicon Valley, so they don't drive over the hill - ha!

Problem is, they might get really good and then drive over and dominate.

Maybe not.  They would probably only be good at waiting in line for a perfect wave that requires no reading of the incoming swells and no wave judgement.  They very likely would stink in a real surfing lineup because they would be used to having a perfect wave hand-fed to them.

I won't be stung by a jellyfish? or bit by a shark?

Kelly and I can surf way after dark.

Just how I like it, solid head high

and reduces the chances that I could die.

Always predictible, long rides on glass

An affront to the purists, many will pass.

My skills will improve, I'll excell in the class.

Will I use this wavepool ?

You bet your sweet ass !!

That True - they probably wouldn't be able to negotiate a crowded line up to catch a wave.

A big part of my love for surfing is my love of the ocean. Doesn't mean this wouldn't be fun and something I'd do if in the area.

The latest from Kelly's wave~

Kelly Slater's Wave Gets Torn Apart by Nat Young, Kanoa Igarashi and Carissa Moore!

The invitees discuss Kelly's perfection and how it'd fare as a stop on tour.

Can't argue that it's a perfect wave, but I wonder if something can be too perfect.  No surprises, no variation...hmmm.
