Winter shoes/boots for Race Training?
« on: November 03, 2015, 02:38:34 AM »
Hello

Around freezing point neo booties are way too cold for me for training on my Race Board.
I thought about getting wading boots (fly fishing kind of) or sailing boots.
What are you zoners using in freezing conditions?

Greetings from Austria
Bernhard

My feet and hands get cold really easy due to Raynaud's syndrome.

I wear Xcel 7mm boots with polypropylene socks and have been perfectly warm in temps down to 15 degrees F. The socks make it easy to get the boots on and off as well as add another layer of warmth.

A good tip is to bring along a gallon of hot water and pour it into your boots and mitts just before you launch.

I'm notsure they are distributed in Austria
but the NeoSPORT 7mm High boots You feet will be toastie warm. and easy to get into

SUPTHECREEK turned me on to these

ONLY drawback
You can swim a little in them but I wouldn't want to "Swim Home" in them

Advise
Buy these at least ONE SIZE bigger than your regular size

Working on a river boat in my youth, I can tell you, don't wear any kind of wader or other rubber boot unless you have a pfd on.

You will sink to the bottom in rubber boots and can't really swim at all in them.

Jogging is really good to keep in shape I hear. ;)

While writing my original post I thought there might be discussion about the waders. Actually I was thinking about these kind of wading boots:

(Though swimming in those would be no fun either).

Thanks for clarifying. I knew you knew but some idiot googling might have seen that. Critical difference, those boots float, the rubber ones don't.

Where I live 5mm is all I need, I tested Patagonia's wool lined 5mm with Xcel and other booties and they are the warmest I have ever worn.  Their R5 booties might be worth looking at, I think they stopped making the wool but a rep told me to contact FCD and ask about having them custom made.
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.
