El Nino and the Blob
« on: October 23, 2015, 09:52:38 AM »
Good video explaining the current state of El Nino and a discussion of "the Blob". It's going to be an interesting winter.

Very interesting. California might get the rain they've been praying for, and then a hell of a lot more. Thousand year flood from oregon to soCal. There's no place in america with the infrastructure to control anything more than a 100 year flood, and California has less than most. Interesting might not be the word for it.

This makes our move back to Rhode Island in a month a little easier to deal with.

One of the safest locations in general for flood survival is on the outskirts of an alluvial fan (where I live)...until an event comes that covers the outskirts of the fan...and then you're hosed.

If a flood covers the outskirts of an alluvial fan then you're just joining a hell of a lot of people in being hosed.

I have been reading the NOAA web pages devoted to monitoring El Nino. If you don't mind wading through the climatology jargon, it is pretty interesting stuff.

PowerPoint: http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/lanina/enso_evolution-status-fcsts-web.pdf

ENSO (el nino/southern oscillation) page: http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/enso_advisory/ensodisc.html
