Lightheaded when I hop up: anyone else with this problem?
« on: January 04, 2009, 05:49:12 PM »
Cheers all!
Been surfing for 35 yrs and SUP for 2 years now. In the past 6 months or so  I've been feeling like I'm going to faint and drown when I hop up on my board after getting smacked down by a few set waves. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Its such a bummer I can't even surf outside on the bigger days.
Thanks

Wow... that doesnt sound good... Never had that problem... Might be an inner ear issue.... I'd check it out.

Welcome to old age, buckwheat. a couple of things that help a lot--make sure you are well hydrated--chug a lot more water than you want before you head out--a  full quart or more.

Vitamins. I know, mostly they just make you pee yellow, but I've found a number of my fundamental issues are mitigated by a multivitamin every day.

Two-step your hop up. I know, it doesn't look as cool, but I generally get to my knees, take a second, get a foot under me and get up a little, then stand. I hop up sometimes too, and it's usually okay, but sometimes the world spins a little.

Don't stay squatting with your knees bent sharply too long. It restricts flow to your legs, I guess, and when you straighten up you unkink the hoses. all the blood goes to your feet. Like it used to go other places when you saw a sexy thang. We used to call that a wreltney--passing out from a sudden erection.

I dove straight into a grocery shelf the other day after spending too long squatting down to look at pineapple juice. Pretty spectacular.

Sucks getting old.

you should really see a doctor if this is a regular thing

otherwise maybe you are just unfit or possibly sunstroke, dehydration are contributing

water in the ear ? try wearing ear plugs

it could be seasickness - do you get sea sick ?

That sucks...welcome to my world.

Any ringing in your ears or hearing loss that you've noticed. As Bill said...could just be getting old and blood not moving like it used to. Could be a bunch of other causes too though. Sounds like a trip to the Doc is in order just to be sure.

Hello all!

I went to the doc and he ran me through lots of test for heart probs. He said I was fine. The problem would not go away so he gave me a beta blocker-said it would take care of everything-not! I too think it has something to do with my inner ear. Thanks for the advice-I'm going to get some vitamins, hydrate alot out there and see if it improves.

Thanks again!

You may want to go to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist and have them run some balance tests.

If doc checks you out, tha "Laird-almighty" has some good vitamin & supplement suggestions in his book.  Of course, as my dad says, "when it comes to advice, supply always exceeds demand and you get what you pay for."

Since my wife has diabetes, we pay for premium medical services. That means when you wander in with a complaint they give you a nice cup of coffee and test the heck out of you, just like in the bad old days when Docs made money from tests.  I had a full set of checks when I started swooning on a regular basis. Exotic stuff that I don't remember the names of including some kind of stress cat scan thing, an MRI of my gourd, and other stuff. the basic conclusion was that I'm an old guy that still plays like a kid.

I could have told them that without even the coffee.

The symptoms have relented since I started drinking a lot more water. Now I'd like a fix for my shoulders locking up in the middle of the night, and the the leg cramps that make me leap out of bed and hop around like a loon. I fear the real solution is one that I will never, ever, ever do--act my age.
