How nuch of a bow does the shaft have Randy? I put a slight bow in the 2nd one I built and was thinking of increasing it on the next one.

Mine does not have any bow, only very subtle contouring.  I tried to take some shots of the shaft, but the lens distortion is more dominant than the nuances of the shape.  Excuse for a large format view camera and a studio setup?   Maybe, but OT  :).

Malama does do curved shaft paddles, but at 85 inches things could get heavy quick,  and any extra wood...

You had asked earlier about the shaft meeting the blade.  The shaft ridge forms the peak of a dyhedral that exists at that area of the paddle.  It transitions to flat at the end of the shaft juncture and stays flat (horizontally) from there to paddle tip.
The shaft itself is ovular (well...a blend of an oval shape and an almond shape...just right) so the high point of the shaft naturally flows into the ridge of the upper blade dyhedral.

I hope that makes sense.

Better yet, when you are on Maui, you are more than welcome to check it out first hand and take it for a spin.

Okay that picture is flat out PADDLE PORN!

All kidding aside, congrats Rand, Malama paddles are truly amazing. They are as much ART as they are function.

Actually, I saw one in person a few weeks ago. I was at Sunset Beach (actually Kammie’s) checking the surf and meet another SUP’er . After showing me his board, he pulled out this stunningly beautiful wood paddle. My first reaction was to say it looked to beautiful to actually use. It was kind of funny because he joked about the contrast between his SUB and paddle. He had this beat up old tandem board he converted into a SUB and this gorgeous paddle next to it.

My wife still wants an all wood paddle (currently she has a C4 wood shaft with a fiberglass blade)  and I think I made a mistake showing those pics!

...maybe in a roundabout way, but anyways, you make up for it in handsome :)

That small, fun day when we all swapped gear was a real eye opener.  I had never really given much thought to wood paddles prior to that, so I owe you a beer.
