Wetsuit in machine spin cycle?
« on: September 19, 2015, 11:08:53 PM »

Any downside/risks to running your wetsuit in washing machine machine spin cycle? (front load)

You know how wetsuits can suddenly seem to have become more porous at some point? The wetsuit will essentially be lying flat against the drum in the spin. I’m wondering if the water pressure trying to push through the neoprene will degrade the neoprene is this way. Or is that effect more from the neoprene degrading from age and other reasons to become porous?

Not unless you want your washing machine to smell like pee.

Wash it by hand and throw it in the dryer on low heat.

I just sat the washer to low spin speed and then throw it in the dryer.

It's a lot more fun to hang it up at various spots around the outside the house and scare the heck out of yourself and your family.

Years ago, my wife wanted to do me a surprise favor, so she ran my new wetsuit through a regular wash cycle at regular hot water temp, dried it real nicely on medium heat for an hour or so. My wetsuit was so nice and clean; she was so happy!  Brought it to me with a big smile on her face.  Only small detail; the heat collapsed the foam and began to degrade the overall quality of the suit.  My $200+ wetsuit was now little more than a full-body rash guard because it lost most of its insulation properties.

Our front-load washer stopped working this week (wouldn't drain). Service guy diagnosed it as a bad pump, and said they can get clogged with sand and rocks. So at least shake off any sand stuck to your wetsuit before throwing it in the wash!  ;D

I've never heard of washing a wetsuit in a washing machine, or ever considered sticking it in a drier. Of course mine probably smell like burning cockraoches, but I can't tell. All I've ever done is rinsed them with a little dishwasher soap and hung them up. If they start to smell like piss you add a pouch of no-stink. I had a friend who used to rinse his suit out with some kind of enzyme stuff, but he got a rash in his crotch that looked like a second degree burn.

Hand wash, use the wetsuit detergent. (Don't ask, just google) ;)

Hang it dry and be done. Keep your old one for double sessions when it's cold.
