Well, Indian Beach was a lot more crowded today, though only 1 SUP out for most of the morning(me) and the swell was better than I expected but worse than I hoped. I think that's standard. Funny thng was, I saw a good sized shark, probably Mr. Whitey doing the driveby I asked for. I laughed so hard I almost fell in. He was out at the north end of the cove near the curve of rocks, obviously taking fish, There were two grebes and a bunch of seagulls taking the leavings I suspect.

I watched him for a while, then paddled in a little and started taking waves again. A guy on a longboard (we were the onlyt two down at that end) asked what I had been looking at. I siad "do you really want to know?"  Unlike Mr. Headmount he said yes. I told him he was safe as long as there are shortboarders around, they're the ones that look like seals. But he moseyed down past the lineup, and I saw him walking on the beach a few minutes latrer. I had the spot all to myself. Wasn't looking to do that. nice to have some company and there were beaucoup waves.

I stayed out until about 1:00. Two other SUP guys showed up. I switched from my Foote 10'4" to my 8'8' L41 and made a fool of myself, falling and falling. I haven't been on it all summer. But when I caught waves with it, wow. What a great sled. I'm ging to have to pay my dues and get comfy on it again. Or lose 30 pounds and it will be easy. As it is, it's mostly underwater.

Random closures is an excellent idea. If nothing else, it's going to protect the children.
Yes, I'm glad people see the obvious potential of random closures.

The fact remains that nobody has been attacked during a beach closure.  100% of attacks happen before or after.  In fact, the ones that happen after a beach closure happen LONG after.  But again in nearly 100% of cases, the attacks happen IMMEDIATELY BEFORE a beach closure.  So if the beach closures are done on a random basis--THAT IS BEFORE A SHARK HAS A CHANCE TO ATTACK INSTEAD OF JUST AFTER--it should be possible to virtually eliminate all attacks.

I knew you were F#@$ing genius but this just blew me away, so obvious. I'm really, REALLY surprised our elected officials/petty bureaucrats haven't thought of this yet. It sounds so much like what they would do.

PDX obviously spends too much time with regulatory bodies. When I uswed to spend timke with FEMA I got pretty good at predicting their next stupid move just by applying basic criteria to their decisions--what greedy, stupid, self absorbed thing will they do next.
