getting an SUP to Matapalo
« on: August 25, 2015, 04:32:04 PM »
Anyone traveled to Matapalo with an SUP? I know my 9'6" won't fit on any Sansa flts., or Nature air. I'd rather not rent a car in San Jose and drive al the way down. has anyone paid a bus driver to bring a board bag down to puerto Jimenez from San Jose?
TrAVELING DOWN THERE THIS WINTER AND WOULD LOVE TO TAKE MY BOARDS AND NOT SETTLE FOR BEAT UP RENTALS.

lapa rios? loved matapalo, and also baby beach right out front, when matapalo was too much for me--which it can be when ramping

used the resort's boards (prone)--they had a couple of decent longboards

I have put boards on the bus to Puerto Jimenez many times but 9'6" might be too long for the bus compartment.  Where are you staying?

The drive from SJ isn't as bad as you think with the new toll road.  Stop for the night in Dominical, wake up to perfect beach break (won't be huge that time of year) and then it's a quick leg down into the Osa.  We did it last two years running.

I got two SUPs, an 8.5 and a 9.1, bubble and cardboard wrapped, with pool noodles on the rails, into one bag, on AA to Liberia, CR. The bag, an adustable Epic Gear windsurfing bag, was adjusted to 9.6. It easily would take just one board.

I am planning a trip to Matapalo soon as well so any suggestions on SUP spots, rentals, etc. appreciated.

I have an 8'2" Sunova Speeed I am considering bringing and maybe my 9'4" Hobie as well - I have a 9'6" coffin bag that I used for windsurf gear.  I prefer to rent if there is decent gear.

Wondering if there is a good 2 piece paddle for travel as well.

Thank you.

Matapalo on the Osa Peninsula or Matapalo near Dominical?  Cause there is no such thing as a condo on the Osa.

We have hired Costa Rica Shuttle (ask for Charlie) to drive our boards from San José Airport to Puerto Jiménez or as far down the dirt road as Martina's (Buena Esperanza) Bar & Restaurant. It takes him about 5 1/2 hours and he definitely is driving fast! Not cheap at $450 but divided by several friends, not too bad, especially if having your own board is important. Another idea is to start early the next day and have plenty of time to make the drive in daylight. We do this renting from Vamos Rentals and leave San José by 9 AM to have time to buy groceries in Puerto Jiménez and arrive and unpack. As you probably know, at 6 PM, it becomes very dark.

For rental houses, look at the 4 homes offered by Lyn LaCava. Casa Bambu, Casa Linda  are the closest to the water's edge at the Pan Dulce break. Great prices and beautiful. It is an easy walk to BackWash Bay and another 15" or so to Matapalo.

Agree completely with the packing advice: bubble wrap on deck and bottom of the board, gas pipe insulation for rails, extra padding for paddles and spoon them into curvature of the bottom of the board, and a well-made padded travel bag.

Mucha suerte!

Initially staying in Guanacaste.  Then going to an area not to far where my friends condo is.
