Standard mounting pattern for deck packs?
« on: August 14, 2015, 05:30:32 AM »
Hello Zoners-

I am getting ready to set plugs into the deck of an unfinished touring/recreational board for a lashing cord system and/or a deck pack.

Is there a 'standard' layout for a 4 or 6 plug pattern? Somewhere I read 15x15" square for 4 but I cannot confirm or
deny this as I don't have a board or pack for reference. Is there a point where a pattern is too big to be practical, or is there no such thing as too much lashing space?

Thanks, J

That's kind of like asking, what size shoes should I get.  The answer by the way is the same, get the ones that fit you.  Define what you intend to carry and optimize accordingly.

I have a Tahoe touring board with 4 plugs front and rear, 15" squares. Tahoe's accessories (cargo net, back pack, dog pad) are made to clip into that size... Can't speak for other brands.

Thanks everyone. It looks like a couple others are making their bags for 38cm/15" spaced plugs too. -J

It varies and depends on board size, and how much gear you are planning to bring. You can set your tie downs as wide and as far down as you want. As long as the bungee or cam straps are tight, your gear will stay put. My Starboard touring was not equal up front or in the back and the inserts tapered in as the board narrowed. 4 up front and 6 in the back. Some specific touring boards such as the Tahoe Tallac have 6 up front and 6 in the back. I go camping occasionally and like inserts/tie downs set as wide as possible to accommodate a lot of gear. I have the NSI rubber plates, with 4 up front, and I wanted 6 tie downs on the back of the board, but have 4 for now. I went wider than 15". If you have bags with adjustable cam straps, you have more room to play with when deciding on how wide you can go.

Thanks Robon.
The board is for recreational flat water use, the cargo will likely be a PFD, sweatshirt, snacks, and maybe a dog too, depending how it likes being onboard. It's not my board or dog. Enclosing a shot of the board in question, fin boxes will be on the bottom provided I don't get confused during routing. The front is looking like 4 plugs for cargo and one out the nose. I am only going to put the far back plug and wait to see if more are needed. -J

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if that is your carrying handle in the center, and it's roughly going where you show it in the picture, your stance sweet spot may very well end up right around or forward of the handle...right where you plan to lash your gear....you may want to take that into consideration...seem to remember something about two objects not being able to occupy the same space at the same time ;)

No worries. That is a Gearbox2 center box that I just mounted on the bottom of the board to hold a ventral fin. I am hoping the sweet spot, traction, and handle all end up in the recessed area.

All the plugs, vents, and boxes are in.  Topside are four plugs for cargo, two w/ Goretex vents, plus one nose and one tail. Bottom has a 10.5" Bahne box in the back and the Gearbox ventral, which I hope is near the entry point of the rider's paddle stroke.

Thanks for the input everyone! -J
