Is SUP Cool?
« on: July 22, 2015, 02:26:07 PM »
We all know it's super fun, but is it cool?

A similar question appeared in SUP the Mag this month and I was interested to know what Zoners thought.

I think SUP is very cool with people who wear dentures and drive Hovverounds.

For other age groups, it's an acquired taste?

How come they don't have models with oxygen tank holders and defibrillators?.

Like everything, it depends who you ask. Obviously, the peeps on this board think it's cool.

When I first saw people doing it on hot, windless days, I thought it was pretty stupid. It looked slow and awkward and frankly, boring. I had a 17' kayak at the time that was a whole lot faster and more fun to paddle on glass.

Then, while I was out windsurfing in the Gorge on a day that was blowing about 30, I saw people downwinding for the first time, training for the upcoming and very first Gorge Paddle Challenge. THAT intrigued me. It look fast and challenging and fun and the big long boards were actually surfing the swells. Cool.

A few months later it occurred to me that you could probably take a smaller stand up board out in the surf. So I tried that. Changed my whole life.

So, yeah, it's cool to me. Not sure I give a rip about what other people think of it. Stand up paddling been very good to me.

Here, in flatwater, standup's comparison is kayaking, dragon boats, etc.  It attracts a younger, fitter, better-looking, etc. crowd so cool makes sense.

In areas where the comparison is non-standup surfing, I'd guess the case for cool is harder to make.

It's cool in the sense that it is a super fun and healthy and diverse sport, but on the hip side it's about as hip (amongst more traditional surfers) as a rubber band collection or an Eagles tribute band playing a punk/indie rock festival.  Maybe in the paddle sports world it ranks a bit higher.

To an 18 year old hung up on punting airs while unable to do a proper bottom turn?
UNCOOL

To a 62 year old that's been surfing for 45 years and is tired of the surf scene and doesn't want to (body doesn't want to) pop up anymore? VERY COOL.
Learning to switch hands with paddle and the many other cool little tricks is like being a grem again. Learning new stuff. That's the key to forever stokedness....
Once you lose the stoke just pack it up.

I think it's getting cooler, at least here in Hood River.  You just have to watch the local high school kids to see what's really cool these days.  Thanks to Steve Gates/Big Winds and the Jet program here, there's lots of talented young folks who are stoked about paddling and its spreading.  Huge numbers of kids getting into paddling these days.  My son is actually shifting from hanging out at the skate park to going out and practicing bouy turns, no input from me ;)
Lots of curiosity at the coast about SUP surfing as well.  Just about every time I'm loading up my van after a surf session, longboarders come up and want to check out my gear.  Apparently the want to know how an old kook like me can catch so many waves :)

I will say this.  It may or may not ever be cool in the surf world, but outside of that I think it's becoming more accepted as "cool".
