Thanks Mil-Surf

I never heard that part of the story before... very nice!

Coast Guard Beach is chosen every year as one of the top 10 most beautiful beaches in America.... so it was a great addition to the National Park system

I lived there in 2 different beach shacks from 1971 till 79'

That building is magical.... I have taken at least 1,000 pictures of it and still marvel at how beautiful it is from every angle

It has a HUGE place in Surf History on Cape Cod and the world.... many greats have surfed here... including Chuck Patterson last year (kited... too much wind)
Jeff Hackman, Mike Doyle, Nat Young, Gary Chapman, Mike Tabling, Skip Frye... and many more

It has probably the largest & strongest SUP crews on the East Coast.... including visits by MANY many Zoners

It is beautiful  at dawn, dusk, sun, rain or snow

I am going to SPAM this thread with pictures I have taken of this building and this spot.
I apologize if you are on a Data Plan.... don't look at the next two posts  ;D

Here are some pic of the site from the 50's to now
Some I marked up so bad I'll post twice so you can see them

Love it Creek!
So many good memories there. Skipping school to surf, awesome windsurfing days, fires at night. Truly an awesome place to grow up. My folks have stories of the blizzard and have some cool pics too. I should see what they got. I grew up on Mill rd, Depot Pond, the old ice house. We had tons of old Cape pics. Have been the the Coast Guard since college and have to say that building had some influence. Need to plan a trip! Could not imagine living right there!! Thanks for the pics!

I love this shot with the mackerel sky.
It takes a quiver to do that.

Mil Surf, thanks for posting the article, and Creek thanks for the photo essay.  My folks built a second home about 2 miles from the Coast Guard station in 1976 after vacationing in Eastham for many years before that.  I remember the old parking lot, and seeing the beach buggies headed down the sand trail to the camps (beach cottages) that dotted the dunes down towards the ever shifting Nauset Inlet, aka The Spit.  I also remember standing on the bluffs watching the surf destroy the remains of the bath house in 1978, shedding a few tears because I thought we'd never be able to go to Coast Guard Beach again.  I spent every summer from age 16 to 27 in Eastham or Orleans, and Coast Guard Beach (along with Marconi) was where I learned to surf.  I rode my first tube at a sandbar we called "First House" because it was in front of the first house in the dunes as you headed south down the beach, and now I take my kids surfing there. For a while, the Park Service used the building as summer housing for lifeguards, and I went to a couple of really good parties there back in those days.  The Coast Guard station is nothing short of iconic in my mind, and it provides a surf check lookout (stand up on the split rail fence for a better look), a line up indicator, a navigational aid and a familiar old friend on the hill.  Every year when I roll back into town, it's always the first place I go, and it's the first place I will go in a few weeks when I'm back home for my annual pilgrimage to the Cape.
