Oh now I'm pissed!  This is no doubt from the Dory "commercial fisherman"  who launch their boats in the protection of Cape Kiwanda.  These "fisherman"  consider themselves professionals providing food stocks to the local community but in reality are far from it.  They are in essence hobbyists.  All they sell to the local establishments are the bottom feeding rock fish.  I have tried to purchase fresh caught wild salmon from them and they refuse.  By there own admission they keep all the salmon for themselves and family members.  None of it is available to the general public, even if you offer premium prices. They are just hobbyists and nothing more. Game on.  If they succeed I will be converting my tow ski to a "fishing vessel" and doing a little reverse engineering of the situation.

Thanks Bill, I figured you would. Please pass it to your OR buddies as well.

The thing that erks me is that those guys are hardly ever there. Seriously, I have been out maybe every third day for the last 6 months and have seen 4 boats go out / in.

Most of the Dory guys don't have an issue with us..

Besides its the pronies that they cant see.. I am always telling them boats are coming..

I'm skeptical about them.  Can't think of who would want to do that other than them.  A lot of it is lip service.

This just pisses me off too. I wish there was a regulation that stated that idiot's can not run for city council. If that were the case, I bet they'd have a hard time finding anyone to run for city councils.

Some pretty good discussion here, mostly by dory people who also oppose the regulations:
http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?p=10059194

Most opinions seem reasonable--use common sense, education and courtesy instead of regulations.  Plus it sounds like oblivious people on the beach are a bigger safety problem, and the regulations don't do anything about that.

SUPs add a weird wrinkle.  They are not vessels while they're in the surf zone, but if you're not surfing as you're paddling out through the surf zone, you're not a surfboard either, and it sounds like the regulations are aimed at "surf boards".  So if the regulations passed, and you were out there on a SUP but not surfing, you could argue you have a complete right to be there, depending on the exact wording of the regulations.

Since the traditional Dories were powered by oars, they have more in common with the modern SUP than the modern (outboard wielding) Dory.

Leonard Leis is the petitioners name of public record,  He is a Doryman, but apparently acting without the concurrence of the Dorymans Association.

standuped--thanks for posting the actual proposal.  Two things stand out to me.  First, he cites a law that it's illegal to ride a surfboard in a way that's hazardous to others, so to me that means there's already a law that can be used when problems arise.  Second, he asks that surfing while dory rigs and trailers are parked on the beach is proof of a violation.   To me, that means that if the law passes, dory rigs and trailers should be prohibited from parking on the beach, and only allowed to be brought in exactly when needed.  Otherwise they are preventing people from surfing on a public beach even when there's no dory in sight.  Now, there's no problem with them parking, because it doesn't prevent anyone from surfing, but with the law, the parking prevents surfing, which is a significant problem.  I doubt dory people would be happy about parking restrictions arising, but that's inevitable with the law, and they may realize that, since many are opposed to the proposal.
