My newly aquired JL Stun Gun 9'2 and World Wide 8'5
« on: April 22, 2015, 04:44:06 AM »
I picked up the Stun Gun 9'2 about a month ago and more recently a World Wide 8'5. I had to wait for the snow to melt and the sun to come out to take some decent pics.

I'm still fairly new at surfing so I can't really give them much of a review.

I've ridden the Stun Gun four or five times. 9'2 X 30.25 124L. So far I love it. I was hoping it would be a bit more stable but I think I'll get used to it in time. It felt a bit sluggish at first in our slow mushy waves but switching it over to quad gave it a lot more speed and improved it quite a bit. With it's narrow tail and longish outline, it not great in tiny waves. I bought it for when it's chest high or bigger.

The World Wide 8'5 X 30 125L is awesome. It's actually more stable than the Stun Gun. I turned that into a Quad as well. I've only ridden it a few times in less than perfect conditions. It seems like it will surf anything from knee high mush to overhead although I think I'm going to prefer the Stun Gun in the bigger stuff just because it feels like it will have more control at higher speeds.

I put NSI tail handles on both. I really like these. They stick extremely well. I had one on my Angulo Surfa 9'4 for the past year and it never failed even in overhead conditions. I sold the Angulo to get the Stun Gun.

NICE!!

Can't wait to hear how your WW rides.  If you don't mind, what are your dimensions and general areas where you surf.

Ha ha... I paddled that little WW... at least I made it look little. Quite a nice board. Thanks badger  ;D
I was at 230 plus wetsuit and it was pretty easy in flat-water.... in the surf, I am sure I would have struggled, but I was impressed for such low numbers for me.

See you later in the week!

My dimensions are 6'1 X 165lbs.

I mostly stick to the NH coast, occasionally southern Maine.

Creek, you have some amazing balance.

When you first hopped on the 8'5 that day and the board went completely under, I thought you'd be spending more time swimming than paddling. It only took you five seconds to find the balance point and off you went paddling all around the harbor and back without falling once. I was impressed.

badger, both boards look great.

how well does the 8'5" catch waves? Will you be able to sit outside or will you have to be closer in with the proners?  I ask because the 8'5" interests me, but I'd hate to lose that glide you get from a longer board.  At 31" and 141 liters the 8'9" is way too big for me..truthfully the 8'5" and  the 30" width scares me too, but it looks sweet.

Saw one in York yesterday and was very impressed.  I traded in my Naish X32 LE and have to decide between another JL Kwad or WW as a replacement….

I have a StunGun also and love it. One thing you might think of doing is waxing that real estate in front of the deck pad. That gloss coat is slippery as snot and if you are like me and have a tendency to put a foot up there sometimes, it is nice to have it stick. Or just being able to grab or push off the nose with your hands, like when going thru white water that is too big and the board gets kicked back into your face, wax helps a lot.

Hi Don, I haven't had a day with good enough conditions yet to really have an opinion.  It has been windy every time out and it's a challenge for me in the chop. I don't think it requires a late take off but at the same time, it feels pretty short compared to what I'm used to. It seems to catch waves pretty easily. I'll have a better opinion once we get some glass or at least lighter wind.

You are welcome to take it for a test spin anytime. Send me a PM if there is a good day and maybe we can meet somewhere. Garrick wants to try it too. Maybe we can have a Zoner demo meet up sometime.

Sweet rides.

Those tail handles, is that just a peel & stick adhesive that keeps them on?

This one?

Kind of funny you should say that because that's exactly what happened one day. I was paddling out on a head high day and when I hit the whitewater, the board kicked right up into my face. I put my hands up to block it and caught the paddle shaft right in the teeth so hard I thought I knocked my front teeth out.

This board requires a whole different whitewater technique due to its thinned out tail.

I've already stepped on the foredeck a few times. Wax is a good idea.

Yup, that's the one.

It's funny they don't even suggest it to be used as a tail handle. They should because it works great.

It's peel and stick. The glue is on a very thin layer of foam material which makes it stick really well.

Badger Thanks for the offer, I might have to take you up on that.   Next swell you should join us up in York.  And this summer we will have to get together and finally do that York River paddle..not on the WW of course  ;D

Yes, I still haven't done the York River. I definitely want to do that.

And you should come down here and do a downwinder across Great Bay. We usually start in Stratham or Newmarket on a W or NW wind and finish at my house. Luke (Board Stiff) has done a few with me. It's a blast.
