The Mazda works great for up to 3 boards with aftermarket Thule aero bars on attachment points standard to Mazdas.  Paddles stick across the armrest but don't get near the dash. The Highlander has more room for junk but gets sub 25 mpg with the boards whereas the Mazda stays in the 35 mpg range with 2 boards on the roof.

I'm going to rework my three wheeler to carry my 12'2". I figure if I do the rack for a specific board I can optimize it and make it practical. The board will be the roof.

I'm also adding a Nuvinci rear hub. I hope I didn't just waste six hundred bucks. After buying the hub and getting a wheel laced on (which required custom-made spokes) I discovered it's only rated for 250 watts. Hopefully that's conservative, I routinely do five hundred electric plus me, and peak at 1200watts electric.

Hey guys, thought I'd throw this up ….the Tesla takes a rack just fine as noted w/ the pano roof version I used a whispBar rack to keep the nice aero concept going but even that one makes more wind noise than the rest of car combined

BTW thats a very cool airstream toy hauler!
cheers

Flip the board over and you might reduce the noise, that thing is catching some serious air while driving, prolly get better mileage also.
It takes a quiver to do that.

I'm going to show that to Diane, even though it won't change a thing. A surfboard dripping water on her precious Tesla--or horror of horrors, some kind of loading incident causing the tiniest ding? Not going to happen.

I love my airstream, can't believe I let it sit so long. I refurbed the fridge, modified the garage cabinets to fit the new exhaust system on Peyote, and fixed most of the nits in the interior. It's ready to roll again. Maybe one of these years I'll haul it down for the BOP. I'd need to manage the logistics of parking it where I could get electricity. I'll talk to Sparky about it this year, maybe he has some ideas.

The Electric TR3 I'm building will fit inside the Airstream. That could be a fun combo for a BOP trip.

YEP, knew I would get that comment and realized it is not the best for aerodynamics, it was just a fairly short non highway drive and the hollow F-16 sat on the racks better that way than flipped over….

PB get your point about dings/saltwater, covered the seats with Wet Okole covers and taking normal precautions but after all the car has got to be used, right?

My baby. 1991 VW in-line 4 water cooled Combi.  It has LSD so when I let the air out of the tires, it will go just about anywhere... I get around 25 MPG at 60 MPH.  I love my Combi!

Johnnyo--I transported my 12'1" that way for about three years.  It even worked for a trip from Huntington Beach to Monterey.  When I switched to a displacement board, I was advised not to  do that any more.
