It looks like my board is 100 liters.  There is not much info on the 2012's anymore but I found this site that servs up a PDF file says it's 100 liters: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=10&ved=0CDcQFjAJ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.osmsports.com%2Fnaish%2F12naish%2F2012supprice.pdf&ei=43PRVIvrEtDtoASX1YGIDw&usg=AFQjCNHze7e-X1NR4ZZoDf-z_GUm90lacw&bvm=bv.85076809,d.cGU

Looks like an Japanese SUP dealer, I think.

I love mine!  One of my favorite Hokuas... until maybe this week when a 7'8 LE arrives  ;)

It's funny, your new 7'8 is going to be less volume than your 7'3.  1/2 inch narrower too.  I'll bet it rips.  Please let us know your impressions.

Picked up the 7'8LE today and gave it a whirl in some pretty brutal conditions. I was the only one out and no one was even looking at the waves.   :(  I can't say too much about how the board rides yet as the waves really sucked.  I can say it definitely floats between the 7'3 (100 or 105L?) and the 8'3GT (90L).  The stated volume sounds pretty accurate.  I'm 175lbs dry and 182lbs with wet full suit, booties, and paddle in hand.  It's definitely easier to balance on than the 8'3.  The 7'8 will actually float me without paddling, but only just.  One thing that really stands out is the rocker, LOTS!  If I stand on the tail on flat ground the nose probably comes up over a foot++.  It does not paddle any faster than the 7'3, I think all that rocker really pushes a lot of water when paddling.  The side to side balance isn't bad, but I do have the provided long center fin in which probably makes it more stable than my quad boards.  For as rough as the conditions were I was surprised how well I was able to do.  I did manage to drop in on one shoulder/head high wave and get a somewhat decent bottom turn out of it.  All that rocker makes it really really snappy.  It turns very quickly once the rail is set and speed is up.  Very little glide, I rode a few closeouts and I'm used to flying out clear in front of the wave, but not on the 7'8, it slows down very quickly, again I believe due to all the rocker, esp in the tail.  Very interesting board, quite different than my other Hokuas, I'm going to have to get used to it.  Seems like a very serious and dedicated machine for when conditions are good to perfect.  I have no doubt it will rip amazingly in the right conditions!   ;D
I'll get some board comparison pics up later....

Zoo... nice vid. except the part where you are all cat balance and pulling off all kinds of 1 legged underwater recoveries. Knock it off.... your making me feel old. ;) ;)

Really nice off the tops and slashes... they even look good on the crotch cam. The board looks like a great match for your skills.

The acrobat in the vid is sharksupper, Creek.  Although if Zoo is able to handle that Hokua of his, my hat is off to him.

left to right and bottom to top:  8'5 GT, 8'3 GT, 7'8 LE, 7'3
Hopefully you can get a good idea of how the outlines and rockers compare.
Close ups are of the 7'8 rails/tail.

Had another session on the 7'8 LE this morning, similar conditions (junk, at best), but did get it going a bit more.  Once you get your foot back on the kick pad and get some wave out in front of it, it's pretty joyous!   ;D

Happy Valentines Day!   :-*

At roughly $1800 a board, you got some serious chips into your Naish quiver.  Looks awesome.

Conclusion on the Naish Hokua, 7'3

This board absolutely shreds, but I am getting a little bummed with riding it, to be honest.  I've gotten to the point where I can ride it pretty well, catch waves, only falling over a little, but it is so much freaking work to stay on top of it and my wave count has gone way down now that I'm riding it.   When I catch a wave, I'm in heaven, the thing surfs better than any board I have ever ridden.  But I have to work so hard to get on a wave, and I miss a lot of waves that I have always been able to catch before.  I'm sure it's because I am a little too heavy for it.  The suggested max rider weight is 175 and I'm more like 183.  An advanced wave rider who weighs 165 would be perfect for this board.   So I'm going to put it away for a month or so, and reevaluate again after that.

There is a subtext on the blogs about guys going short who love their boards for a while, especially when on the waves, while working extremely hard otherwise.

It seems that when that decision time comes to actually go out, "Hmm, should I take out the short board and rip on a few waves, or should I take out the longer/wider/floatier one and enjoy the total experience more?" that some of the shorter boards, no matter how much fun, wind up gathering dust.

I suppose that is why I set my "challenge point" at 30 percent liter volume above maximum "wet weight" in kilos with all gear on.  I supposed I might stand a chance of getting performance, balance and challenge advancement without going over enjoyment waterfalls. Didn't want to sacrifice some glide and speed into the wave, either, that's why I opted for the Prowave at a little longer and narrower rather than the shorter, wider paradigm.

There are individuals with balance talent who can whittle that down to 20 percent liter volume above wet weight in kilos, but I suspect they in the upper 20 or 30 percentile for balance talent. I would love to get there but I am not counting on it.

Thanks for your honesty, though, in reviewing your experience with the board.

Good points.  That's why I having a 7'4 X 30  115 liter board made by SUPSports.  I'm hoping to keep most of the Hokua performance but gain a little more user friendliness.   That's an inch longer, 2 inches wider and 10 more liters of volume.  We'll see...I'm hoping that I have gotten the specs right to get it the way I want it.

Knowing how you like to rip instead of simply riding the wave, I think 30 may be too wide and 115L may be too much volume.  Why not go a bit longer, may be in the 7'6 to 7'10 range, keep the width at 28 or 29 and thickness around 3.5 to 3.75 so that you can have a thinner rail and narrower tail for slashing.

Those are good points, Rat.  What Warren has done is designed this board with drastically stepped rails going into the tail.  Supposedly, this makes the board turn like a much narrower tail.  He has assured me that this board is going to be very loose and slashable, while being a little easier to stay on top of and catch waves on.  As they say, the proof is in the pudding.  It should be done in a couple of weeks and I'll give a full report.
