Rode the 7'3 Hokua in lumpy, backwashing, chest high surf at Bolsa Chica today.  As OCSurf can attest, I fell over many times.  At 7'3 it's actually sort of tippy front to back.  The foot placement distance between sinking the nose and sinking the tail is not very big when standing still.

Yeah it's a challenge, but it surfs so freaking fantastic once I manage to get it going on a wave, and I caught several fun ones today.  The Hokua takes pretty steep drops without pearling, goes off the lip and cuts back effortlessly.  Pumps like a skateboard.  Love that!   It's a pretty steep learning curve, and I still pretty much suck on it, but the payoff seems to be worth the effort.

I love mine!  One of my favorite Hokuas... until maybe this week when a 7'8 LE arrives  ;)

Awesome!!
I don't see that model on the Naish website....
There, the Hokua LE 7'3" is listed at 25" wide and 74 L.

Count me in for T6 Meetup #5 if conditions warrant the 1 hour drive.

Zoo, do you think the volume is correct on that board? 105 seems like a lot for only 28 wide at that length. Unless it's pretty thick in the standing area. Does it seem 105L to you based on other boards you have ridden in that range?

Yeah, it does seem like too much volume for that size board.  It is 4 1/2 " thick at the hips, so maybe, I guess.  Maybe it's less.  I know it's a tough little bugger to stand on.  It works me, but I really like it.

There seems to be conflicting information about the volume of this board.  Some say 100L and some say 105L... seemingly both numbers quoted from Naish itself.

I can only compare to other Hokuas on either side of that volume range.  I had a 2011 Hokua 8'4 (103L stated) and have a 2013 Hokua 8'3 LE (90L stated).  I'd say the 7'3 floats a lot better than the 90L and about the same as the 103L.  The 7'8 (96L) comes this week so I can compare it to that soon.

The 7'3 gets pretty difficult when I'm at 180lbs+, but somewhat easy at 170-175lbs or less.  The 8'3 (90L) sinks at 170-175lbs, but if you paddle really hard and keep moving it will stay afloat and it's possible to catch some waves... but I don't recommend it!

Looks like you have the 7'3 wired, good show!  Since you ride the same board, I'd like to ask you a question:  When paddling, do you widen your stance front to back, and keep it narrow side to side?  This feels more stable for me.  Both feet quite close to the center stringer, but spread out farther that normal front to back when paddling.  Still a simi-surf stance, just more narrow side-to-side and longer front-to-back.  I can relate to the rider weight issue.   I'm 182, so I'm over the suggested weight for the board.

BTW, yours might be the best username on the entire zone.  Sharksupper?  Lol, what a great play on words!  Wish I had thought of that!

I have had a few short boarders come up to me after sessions asking me questions about this board, they didn't think an SUP could surf like that!  Ha!  Awesome board!

As you stated in a previous post the board is also tippy front to back.  When it's challenging conditions (bumpy) I do an offset stance, so I go wide from left to right, but then I spread front to back by about 6-12" or so also.  This way you have some side to side as well as front to back control without having to shuffle your feet... just prior to falling off  ;)  I think this is similar to what you were saying in the last post.  Works for me.

When it's not bumpy I can usually get away with a regular side by side stance at a natural spread.  I almost always switch to surf stance for paddling into waves due to the front/back tip.  The channel bottom also has this "squirtyness" to it and it's nice to be in surf stance for the drop in.

I weighed 185lbs when I picked mine up back in 2011.  It's definitely doable, I learned to ride it at that weight.  175lbs allows you to relax a bit in the lineup.

I'm riding the quads that it came with, and love it that way!  Highly recommend if you're into speed and sliding the tail around a bit on the top.  It still holds really good on hard bottom turns too (with enough speed).

I used to ride a Jimmy Lewis Mano, shown in my profile pic, which means Shark in Hawaiian, and I surf inside the Red Triangle up here in NorCal where a few of my friends have been bit so.....  hopefully that name doesn't come true some day!   :D

There is still One left...
Then they are all Gone....

I tried the 8' X 26-1/2" Hokua today, Supposed 95L..

Up to my Cankles and still sinking...
Managed to paddle around in 2 circles before face planting...

I belly surfed it and did OK.

I think my Extended 185# was too much for it..
Maybe when I drop back to 168# and no wetsuit  ?

Otherwise that one for sale too...

I'll bet you would like the 7'3.  We should surf and switch boards for a few waves sometime soon.  Watch me ride it and you will get a lesson in the fine art of faceplanting.  I can't stop riding it, keep taking the punishment though because it surfs like freaking short prone board.

Is it really 105 liters?  Some were saying that seemed like a lot of volume for 7'3 X 28"  I know it's pretty thick.

Yeah let's do that..

I'll bring a board that I have a real good feel for the volume and compare...

I think these two from Ralph are closeouts from two or three years ago.  Not sure what the model year is, but maybe 2011, 2012 or 2013?  Whatever it is, they are not making this particular Hokua anymore.  Nothing like it anymore.  Their current 7'3 is much different.  Looks like much lower volume too.
