Whats the deal with those radical TOMO VANGUARD style surf sup designs?

I have made several boards ranging from 8-0 to 9-3 of this style of board, everyone who tries one is amazed at how manuverable this style is. It lets you ride a much shorter board than you think you would be able to. You just have to get over the strange look of the board. They are so fast.

Parallel rails are fast. Squaring the nose takes the curve out of the front of the outline so drag is reduced by quite a bit. Weird looking though.

I've got a 9'1" x 31 that is remarkably stable. Probably could have gone smaller, but I like easy to use. 

Mine has a fairly conventional shortboard rocker with a single to double concave bottom.

why the squarish nose ?  why not a more rounded nose albeit wide  to facilitate punching  through a wave?

I've been building wide short boards with pointy noses for a number of years now...the Jammer...have had a lot of success with the design...small and bigger waves...my 7'10" is frickin' awesome...and, I have a 7'5" that I just shaped up...still buzzed from this morning...

I also developed a wider Simmons style nose board based off some of the principles of the Jammer success...and, the Hammer was born...IMO, it's the Swiss Army knife of standups...

As far as these Tomo style SUP's...for starters...I prefer arcs, curves, and parabolas in my board and fin designs...so, I have been kinda resisting the double-ender designs...most are too dinner tray kiteboard looking for my personal design and aesthetic tastes...;-)
Quite frankly, I also haven't seen many images of riders taking them into bigger, hollow, surf like I have done on the Jammer...and, for that matter the Hammer....

However, I chat with Tomo's dad and really love the modern surf mats that he does, and we carry them in our store...
Tomo is also an awesome mat surfer, BTW...so, I'm open to what he is doing...even though, my drawn nose, short SUP's under 8' are working unreal...and, I could easily hack 8"-10" off of their noses...but, why?...;-)

Soooo...my natural curiosity brings me to the Mallet...my newest SUP wave riding model designed to explore the parallel rail and wide tail success of my Jammer and Hammer with a more squared off look...this one is 7'6"...will be fun, interesting, and enlightening to ride it back to back with my shorter Jammer and Hammer models...who knows where it will go from here...;-)

How deep was the concave and what did too much concave feel like when riding?

I made one copy of the Tomo but put too much concave in it and it was problematic

I haven't ridden one yet but the story is...

1) Parallel rails are more stable when paddling because the width extends farther forward and aft than a conventional curvy outline. This also enables you to ride a shorter and narrower board.

2) Less curve in results in a faster more down-the-line drive.

3) The hacked off ends reduce swing weight too!

I must confess that I have only ridden one SIM type SUP... it was a 7'11" well know brand...that was very stable at my size in a full wetsuit, I water swapped with another Zoner. I was having a difficult time staying upright on my 8'11 RAW, but it ripped in the 5' waves. When I got on the 7'11 it was much easier to stand around on, caught waves easily, was fast enough... but I couldn't turn it on a rail... all I could do was pivot turn. It felt like surfing on a sheet of plywood. I guess I'm just not a wide tail surfer.

However.... I have been intrigued by the L41 S 5 since I saw Tye's video. His board was narrow at 26", but I really like the treatment of the nose and tail better, as well as the rocker... which SIMMONs types don't really have much of. It seems like the Tomo style have a bit more rocker... but really wide in the nose and tail... so my choice "on paper" would be the L41 S5.

I do like the direction, and would love to surf a few.........any thoughts, or experience on the difference in "Tomo" style shapes?

It's been a while since I rode the L41 SS5.

I looked at the firewire vids then..
Fun to watch this kid ride it..

In the video the Pivot turning keeps the speed of the board, part of the design...releases nicely..

Sup-position... any feedback on the S5 ride?

the tail on the shortboard Tomo is probably 16".... that's a different ballgame than the SUP versions that are probably 10" wider
