I wouldn't put it where your fingers can go over the end of the board. You'd be asking for some broken fingers. The dugout kick-pad type is just fine. If the board twists hard and you try to hang on tight, you can sprain a wrist as well. I have a few different types on different boards. I surf my 9' board in bigger surf. I installed leash plugs with a padded rubber tail handle. My 10'r is for mushy surf. I just have looping clear hose for some small string into some stock leash plugs. I've ripped the EZ plug glue on handles right off the board in OH surf. If I'm hanging on in the impact zone, while facing the beach, I'll try to pull the board towards me and down. If the impact is at some angle that causes the board to quickly twist, I'll let go immediately.
It's not overhead to me!

MaineSUP - On my boards, the NSI pads are 2 1/2" apart when turned 90 degrees.  That makes the handle the perfect width to hold on to with all four fingers. The thumb is not used. I have the pads of the handle right up against the kick pad. The handle doesn't extend beyond the tail of the board. There is no way that it could.

You curl your fingers around the handle like a hook using the two knuckles of your fingers. It feels very comfortable this way when using it.

Your fingers can't get caught, nor can your arm be pulled because if the pull becomes too strong, the knuckles of your fingers simply let go. It works just as well with gloves or mitts.

In use, when about to be hit by a wave, you push down on the tail just before the wave hits. This points the nose of the board upward allowing the wave to pass by without it pulling on your arm. After the waves passes, you don't have to retrieve your board. It's in your hand ready to go.

The key things to remember are....

The adhesive pads must be turned 90 degrees so that the handle forms a curve. 2 1/2" seems to be the perfect distance between the pads.

Clean the board really well before sticking them on. If they are close to the rail, you can bend the corners of the pads slightly to conform to the slope.

Only hold the handle with your hooked fingers, never your whole hand.

Makes sense Badger.  Sounds similar to what I already do using the kick pad but with a little better grip. Thanks for the advice about install as well.

If you want to be 100% sure, use the pipe insulation and tape over it. No way to catch fingers at that diameter.

10-4 surfcowboy.  Thanks.  I've seen the pics of fingers caught and definitely want to steer clear.

Somebody needs to do the damn retail stomp version. It gives much better control than any of the others and there is zero chance of catching your fingers. I miss it when I'm on my other boards.

MaineSUP - Here's close up of the NSI handle on a JL Stun Gun.

There wasn't enough room on the tail so I had to cut the adhesive pads to fit. I think you will have plenty of room on the Speeed.

Thanks Badger. There is not a ton of room on the speeed, see pic.  So, I could either cut the adhesive pads or cut out the stomp pad.  I'd much rather cut the adhesive pad so glad to hear that you did it that way and it worked out (handle didn't pull off).

I broke two fingers holding onto the leash webbing in the surf. Really stupid I know. I do like the design at the beginning of this thread with loop hanging off the board. Looks like it can rotate and gets fingers well away from the board.

Really bad idea. If you want a safe tail handle it needs to absolutely release your fingers if the board spins, twist, or kicks up. I've experimented with numerous kinds over the years, I have several generations of handles on my boards going back years. The safest is just some kind of divot in the tail. Either cut into a kick pad or fabricated. Easy to do, it doesn't have to be much to work, you just need something for your fingertips to hang on to.

I did a video on how to make these, i'll get it posted soon. Lot's better than a rope handle. If someone wants to produce this for sale please be my guest.

Bill, I hadn't seen that before but your setup looks much safer than anything I've seen. That is the only kind of tail handle I think I would consider using. I like how it won't add anymore drag than a regular tail pad too. Did you ever post that video on how you made it?
