Proner helping out a Sup Surfer
« on: September 25, 2014, 03:56:06 PM »
Here is something you don't see everyday a Cape Cod proner retrieving a board for a sup surfer who broke his leash. You don't want to get stuck out there in sharky water check out the seals in the background.

Ya know, it's funny, all the talk about the tension between proners and suppers, I've seen some good things too. I had a very similar thing happen to me last year in RI. My leash broke and the board took off. Good sized inside white water would have pulverized my board on the rocky beach. A short board guy who was just getting in the water waded in and grabbed my board, saw me swimming in with no problem and carried my board up the beach safely away from the water. In another incident a couple months ago, a girl was SUP surfing and dropped in on a short board guy. They both had to bail. She popped her MCL bailing out and had to be carried up the steep rocky beach. The prone guy got out of the water to help me carry her to her car.
Bunch of old shit

Vibe here is different than the west coast too. More crowds more competition and just by the numbers, more assholes....assholes always stand out. Nice to see some civility shown but it's a shame that it deserves notice.

When I think of west coast vs. east coast, I think of West Coast jazz from the 50s, which was known for being laid-back and cool (Chet Baker, Paul Desmond, Shorty Rogers, etc.) vs. the more aggressive, charging East Coast stuff.  I guess that vibe doesn't hold up when competition heats up for a limited resource.

I have been holding loose boards when I can for proners, even though I dread the unleashed.  I just think it is generally a good idea to stay positive even if some of them are negative.

OK, you guys are getting weird. That kind of stuff happens all the time--both ways. I grab people's boards for them a couple of times a year. I've never seen anyone fail to do that unless they just couldn't get to it or the guy who lost the board was leashless.

As I recall, there's a scene in West Side Story where the Sharks and Jets are surfing, and Tony  the white guy's leash breaks, and he's drowning when one of the Puerto Ricans, Bernardo,  paddles out and saves him.  Then when Bernardo paddles in with Tony lying on his board, the white guys don't realize the Puerto Rican has rescued him.  They think he killed him, so they stab Officer Krupke in retaliation while Maria and Anita sing, "Somewhere I Feel Pretty Cool Tonight".

The real question here folks is "How does that Angulo ride?"  Looks to be a 2014 8'8" or 9'5" Surfa model and none of those here on the west coast yet!

I agree with Stoneaxe…it takes away from a simple act of kindness if it has to be noted.  What goes around usually comes around.  Give and it will be given back to you.

I had a similar situation happen to me about a year ago.  My leash snapped in some pretty decent long period hurricane swell that can be a bit of a rarity on the east coast. A short boarder grabbed my board for me and brought it up onto the beach. He had just wrapped up his session for the day while I had only caught a couple of waves before my leash snapped. But not only did he save my board from getting slammed around the shore break, he actually gave me his leash so I could keep on surfing. I told him that was too generous and his response was that the waves were too good to miss out on and since he worked at a surf shop he had plenty of leashes.  We talked for a while before I went back out and after thanking him, we discovered that his newborn son and I shared the same first name.  We saw him a couple months later and met his wife and newborn son on the beach. I still have his shortboard 6' leash and bring it with me every time I surf (even though I make sure I have at least one backup these days). Great vibes all around and underlines the point that there's a strong community of surfers out there that look out for each other, no matter what they're riding on.

Around here, if a boarder needs help - we're all watermen.  We can all use the karma credits.
