Has anyone done a US SUP Tour event?
« on: July 10, 2014, 08:55:34 PM »
I'm thinking about travelling down to compete in the contest at Zuma, wondering if anyone has some feedback how the events are.

Thanks!

Hope to see may of you there...

There isn't much accommodation information on the website. Is there anywhere nearby to camp or stay for free? It's going to cost a bunch to come down, and if my perception is correct, that is not a cheap hotel area!!!

Leo Carrillo State Beach campground is nearby.

It's a really nice place in a wooded canyon, walking distance to ocean.  No RV hookups, but has RV style spaces, running water, bathrooms, and a dump station for RV's.   Plenty of people tent camp there.

Reservations this time of year might be tough though.

My advice?

Be a really (really) good stand up surfer able to rip on both rights and lefts. Ride a very (very) small and narrow board that barely floats you. Use a paddle no longer than your height. Be under 165 pounds and very nimble.

Sleep in your in your car if you have to.... or drive an hour to another campground...
but get yer ass down there and do your thing!

I bet some friendly Zoner would be happy to sponsor you with a spare room for the event.... I would if I lived out there.

Just walk out the door.... drive south, and the rest will work out.

Surf well

14 West,  I'm going to this event and will most likely be car campin' it.  I removed the back seats in my SUV and built a platform that allows me to stash gear underneath and then toss a sleeping bag and pillow on top if I ever needed to.  This weekend will be as good as any to try it out.  Even without a dedicated sleeping setup, you could crash in your car I'm sure.

And this event has Open divisions for the surf contest and race so you don't need to test your skills against the elite (unless you wanted to).  I'll be in the Open surf contest and probably going to do the race too.  Should be a fun weekend.

Check, Check, Check and whoops 185 lbs. If I go I am entering the Elite/Pro Division, so no worries.

Thanks all for the info, need to make the call asap... I'd be flying into LAX and then renting a car from there... just a weekend trip so far too far to drive.

Any predictions on that swell forecast... looks small. Will there be waves?

Small south swell arriving Wednesday, peaking Thursday but should be around, although smaller, on Saturday.  Could be a bit bumpy from winds late morning into afternoon ... but too far out to be accurate.

Noted the suggestion about car camping and saw that you'll be renting a vehicle at LAX.

If you're traveling solo or at least without munchkins, you could change your selection to a minivan or U-Haul van; put a sleeping bag/cot in there with some basic camping gear and you'll have a place to stay as well.

The option to rack out close to the break with gear stashed safely inside is invaluable.   I'm surprised more visitors to SoCal don't do that, especially with the temperate weather here.

I'm a big fan o' the van...
