Campgrounds with places to paddle in the Northeast?
« on: May 17, 2014, 08:35:09 PM »
Hey guys,

My hubby and I are thinking of taking a trip north and we'd like to rough it instead of going the usual hotel/motel route. We're undecided whether it'd be more fun to try to get to New Brunswick or Montreal and I thought I'd ask for some campground recommendations to help us make up our minds. I know the Zone has a few members who are the hardcore type but I think it's likely there are some car campers in this crowd as well.

Can someone recommend camp spots that include places to paddle north of New Jersey?

Do you want to stay along the coast or venture further inland?

Horseneck Beach campground in Westport Mass. Tent and RV sites right on the water. You have many options for SUP paddling including beautiful flat water river, estuary, as well as protected ocean, open ocean and possible surf. All right there from your camp site. Hit me up if you go there, if I can I will go for a paddle with you.

We're in the "research" stage right now so either is fair game.

It sounds awesome, but I'm completely confused by the map on Reserve America which doesn't show a single body of water  :o:

Check out Fishermen's Memorial State Park in RI. We camped there many times before we supped and loved the place. Bays and open ocean are all around, so I'm sure you could find something to your liking.

Skip all those states to the south and spend all your time exploring, paddling and surfing the Coast of Maine.

I can't find fault with Shoals recommendation... Maine has more coastline than the rest of the East Coast... and it's all beautiful. Nice people as well.

If Cape Cod is in your sights... Nickerson State Park is a great campground, where you can stay right on a number of crystal clear lakes... and just a few miles from Ocean, Cape Cod Bay, or the Pleasant Bay area... a paddling mecca that I post so much about.

I forgot all about Cape Cod. That's well worth seeing as well.

I'd be down there all the time if it wasn't such a long drive. I can get to Penobscott Bay and beyond in the same amount of time it would take me to drive out to the Cape but it's on my list of places I want to paddle this summer. I'm also thinking of maybe doing the CCBC this year.

It looks like a nicely laid out campsite. Any site recommendations?

Very helpful, thank you!

Could you be slightly more specific?  :P By the way, do you know what the average water temperature is in September?

If we stick to the coast Cape Cod is a no brainer, neither of us has been back since we were kids so we're overdue for a visit. :) Nickerson State Park is impressive in size, but the casual mixing of tent sites and RV sites is worrisome. I'm not giving up heat and running water so that the guy the next site over can ruin the woodsy atmosphere by lighting it up like Times Square while HBO Go is blasting out through his onboard flatscreen.  :P :P :P

How specific do you want? The website should have all the info you need.

Expect water temps to be in the upper 50s for Maine in September.

One of my favorites is Sea Wall campground in Acadia National Park. It's a nice quiet campground with wooded tent sites, close to the ocean. There's tons of great paddling and other outdoor recreation opportunities in the area, plus plenty of other things to do in the area.

At Fishermens we liked sites 159-163. Tent camped there many times and never had a problem.
We also went to Nickerson several times and liked it a lot. The yurts are very nice but get booked early.

Mt Desert Campground is another good one, right at the head of Some's Sound. Water temps can exceed 70 degrees in Some's Harbor in August/September. I've checked it with a thermometer from my boat many times.

As far as the Portland, Maine area- Winslow Park in Freeport is a nice campground with access to casco bay.

Figuring in the CCBC into your trip is a great idea.
