Putting a sail on an AllWave 8'10"
« on: May 17, 2014, 01:53:32 PM »
I'm thinking about getting a sail for my AllWave 8'10" and was hoping for some input.  I was a high wind, high performance windsurfing junkie back in the 80's and early 90's but have not done it since.  For those of you that WindSUP, would you mind answering a few questions?

Would it work out OK on my board?

Could you do it in 8 to 10 knot winds?  Back in the day, we would never go out unless it was at least 20.

What about the absence of footstraps?  How would that work out?

Would the AllWave get up on a plane in low winds?

Most importantly:  Is it fun?

Could you surf it in 8 to 10 knot winds?

Any idea of how much a rig for my AllWave might cost?

Water, I started windsurfing in the 90s and still sail , but like you said I only go when its blowing 20+

as far as the All Wave goes, I think it would be fun in moderate wind and waves.  I wouldn't sail it just to sail, but to wave sail I think it could be fun and an alternative when too windy/sloppy to SUP.    I own also own a 8'10" All Wave which I bought used 6 months ago . I haven't ridden it much and never put a sail on it but it's in my plans.

I would probably wear a harness but no on the foot straps..

maybe Jim K can chime in as he sells a to of All Waves and windsurfing gear…..

'Brain --

I think the consensus on SUP sailing is it ain't a hi-performance thing.... you just do it for fun and another way to feed your SUP addiction :D

Most ppl seem to recommend a 5.0-6.5m sail.  Probably not going to get truly planing like on a dedicated wsurf board (too much rear rocker).
Like Carib said... harness yes, footstraps no.  The lack of footstraps is fun.  More freedom to do 'whatever'.

I had the AW 9'2" and sailed it a bit, never in high winds though, so never truly got it planing.
It was very stable, comfortable, and easy to uphaul.  Best of both worlds is to take your sup to the beach and throw a wsurf rig in the car, in case you get the itch.

Ask JimK about the Aerotech windsup rig?, it's a all-in-one boom/mast/sail for SUP'ing.  If you don't still have all your old gear, IMO buying all new is too much of a hassle.  Keep it simple, maybe two sails and one mast/boom that can handle both.

Carib is spot on here about when the conditions are not so great for SUP. It's all about wavesailing and not about planing. 5 - 15 knots is all you want and I pretty much just use a 5.2. You want a sail that will disappear. The shlog out will be quite easy. Tack or pivot gybe which will also be easy due to the float of your board. Usually just a few pumps to catch waves to your hearts content.

Harness for sure and no footstraps. If you have the cash then get a nice light wave sail and rig (warning - spendy) otherwise something used will be fine.

JimK what would someone be looking at for a complete set up (I also have the 8'10 Allwave - Creeks leftovers) and often thought about trying it, possibly used or on the lower end of cost?

Lots of good used around...but you would want to make sure it's compatible, and alot of old heavy inefficient junk from the 80's also around

You could gear up nicely for less than $500
a sail  5.5
1 boom
1 mast ("skinny" and carbon)
base
But if you hav't windsurfed, you gotta figure out how to stay upwind.
Really only efficient between 8-18mph....below that you are gonna paddle/above that too much for the board.  IMHO supsail best with a lower rocker longer board
and best with offshore wind  15mph....

See what they have at Sailworld Buzzards Bay/Inland Sea Dennis
Too many for the rack
Some in the shack
Some under decks
Some have straps
