Ever SUS with an umbilical hernia?
« on: March 19, 2014, 04:55:57 PM »
If anyone noticed, I dropped out off the board back in January when I discovered that my umbilical (belly button) hernia was acting up.  Getting a little sore from time to time.  I still haven't got it fixed, and was thinking of wrapping it up really tight and SUSing again until I can get it fixed this summer.

Has anyone done this?  Are you dead from it?  ;)  My wife says I stupid for even thinking of it, but I am going nuts not being able to SUS.

Just put the lint back in and surf ;D

Seriously, that's worth a trip to the doc just for peace of mind.

As long as it is reducible, meaning it will go back in, you are fine.  If it pops out and won't go back in, go to the ER or find your  local surgeon QUICKLY.  If a piece of bowel gets stuck in there, it can strangulate in about 6 hours.

If you already have an incarcerated hernia (won't go back in) and it has been like that forever and you are doing ok, then you likely have fat stuck in there and you may proceed with SUS.  Once again, if it gets a bigger, hurts like crazy, and won't go back to normal, see above.

You should verify these recommendations with a practitioner licensed to practice in your state.  I am not giving any medical advice.

Apparently yes, but only with a reducible hernia...

Juan is right on the money....

I had FULL insurance for my family @ $1,000 + a month, back in 1996.

I got a Umbilical hernia, and the ins. company refused to pay for it.

I surfed prone for the next 10 years. It got bigger as time went by.

I had to put ALL my weight right there as I "popped up"... it always bothered me.

10 years later, I felt a change. It got very painful and hard. It wouldn't move.

I walked into a jam packed emergency room at 9pm on a Friday. I told them I had a strangulated hernia. I was on the operating table 20 minutes later.

It is ok till it's not..... then you don't have much time.

Get it looked at right away....and let your Doctor give you a proper diagnosis.

And to Spooky.... I DID meet a super hot young lady within days of the operation.  :D

You'd think the incarcerated hernia would be the one that was on the inside trying to get out, not vice versa.

But if you do get one, and it won't go in, you can hit it sharply three times, and it will stay in for good because of the three strikes rule.

I wandered into an evening clinic here in Maui to have the doc look at a cyst I have on the back of my neck that had started to grow and be tender. She said "that's ripe for plucking" and had me lay face down on the exam table. "You a surfer?"

"Yup" says I.

She sticks me with some local, slices open the bugger, fishes out the capsule with kelly forceps and says "you're going to be out of the water for a week."

"Suspicious timing for that announcement" says I.

"My husband is a surfer. I know better. Cut first, announce later."
