Wouldn't risk using a longboard leash on a SUP - unless it is a tiny lightweight SUP. Get a SUP specific one....which is thicker.....just not something you want to risk.

So a 7mm leash will not be strong enough for a 8-9' sup?  I'm looking for for a 8' leash for my 8'10".  As said earlier in the thread, recovery time sucks with my 10' leash when holding a paddle in one hand.

To eliminate recovery time and reduce the hold-downs add a tail handle.

Been out a few times now with this leash on my BIC Wing and it's brilliant.. Fallen off a couple times (still getting into SUP so not the best just yet) and it's a breeze to get back on the board and haven't had any tangles!

Not going to be surfing my board either so the "coil weakness" isn't going to be an issue..

Very happy with my purchase.

In Santa Cruz dragging a long leash around means dragging around little kelp bits and sea grass with you. I tuck my leash into the back of my trunks (just a foot or so). This brings the leash out of the water, but pulls right out when you fall in the surf. If I wear a full suit, I have a neoprene band around my thigh that serves the same purpose.
In the pic I have a fanny pack on that I just wear that on cross country cruises.

Good ideas...I will incorporate.  Thanks

Agreed!

How well do those glue on plugs hold?

I have broken off my tail handle, the braided anchor line broke, but the glued on plugs have never released.  I now have them on 4 boards.

So about the 7mm leash.  Will it work with a 150 liter board up to a certain point/wave size?  I want to make sure I don't wipeout and loose my board and hurt a bunch of kiddos boogie boarding on the inside shore break.  I couldn't find a short 8' 8mm leash so i pulled a leash off my surfboard.  It's been holding up well in 2-3' surf.

I just picked up one of these, 6', 7 mm.

I've always been a fan of Pro-Lite leashes on my shortboards.  The 6 foot one on my 7'8" has made my recovery time super quick.  This can be the difference between getting back out before the next wave or spending 10 minutes getting pounded on in the inside.  I never would thought this short of one would work so well but it has.  One kick of the my leg and my board is right there.  If you SUS you might want to experiment with a shorter leash.

PS looks like they have a 8mm one but the shortest length is 7'.

I wanted to follow up on my Pro-Lite leash experience.  I snapped my leash about two weeks ago.  It was pretty stretched out maybe about a foot longer then new but I was a little surprised when it snapped.  I had just gotten in the water and immediately got hit with a 20 wave set on my paddle out.  Tide was low, surf was high, making it pretty intense on the inside.  Two waves in (on my head) my leash snapped, board immediately gone.  I was in the impact zone and the tide was still draining, making it really difficult to get in.

The leash snapped at the lower junction.  Right where it transitions from the round leash to the larger plastic piece that holds the swivel.  It didn’t feel like a lot of force but the surf was dredging in the shallow low tide conditions so who knows.

I went and bought another 6ft 7mm Pro-Lite leash (the exact some one).  It could have been a manufacturing defect or a freak accident.  I really like these leashes, they have a wide ankle strap with heavy padding.  I’ve had problems with other leashes cutting into my ankles.  I also went on-line and bought another one of their leashes, 7ft 8mm Pro-Lite “ The Survivor”.  I plan on only using this one when the surf gets heavy and the 7mm for daily use.  I really like the 6ft length leash for quick recovery.

Anyway I thought I would follow up with my findings.
